Nataiya went into the DHS office on 3-1-16, because she is homeless. Marilyn does not want Nataiya back in the home, but is willing to get the children. Larsen guides the reader in understanding the compassion that would have been shown to the many thousands of children coming upon these unforeseeable circumstances. The modern foster care system is much different than the original Children’s Aid Society. Today there are over 400,000 children placed into foster care. The majority of them are no longer the children of immigrants as they were in the late 1800s. Today children are typically placed into foster care because their parents are deceased, there has been sexual abuse, neglect, incarceration, or medical neglect. “There are several reasons why children enter foster care. Sadly, many homes have more than one of the following issues and a child enters the foster care system for numerous reasons”(Carrie Craft).…

As I read about what was done to Danieal I wanted to curse someone out. Who are these people who think its okay for a child to die with no one there to comfort her? This should have been a red flag first and foremost. Why weren’t the bed sores and the bugs and the malnutrition brought up when she was still alive? She was being visited twice a week from workers (so they say) and hadn’t thought to clean her wounds enough that there were maggots in them when officials found her?! Who are these people and why are they caring for others? This is pure negligence and carelessness in its rawest form. Obviously every single one of the case workers, care providers, and most of all her mother are all responsible for this death. There was no child advocate or relative to speak up on her behalf and defend her. No, this innocent child had to die because certain “professionals” on any level decided not to care. Why does a child have to die in order for ‘the system” to want to do something? Everything in this case was swept under the rug and I don’t think anything was ever documented. Her mother needed to fight for her! If the case worker wasn’t visiting she should have been on the phone or down at the DHS telling them what was going on. I know she had other children but so do other loving caring parents and they make things happen by using their voices! If your child cannot speak for themselves then it is YOUR responsibility to speak for them! From the testimony of the mother, it seemed that the social workers and case workers on this case were belligerent and careless in their car for this child which ended in her death. This breaks my heart and puts fire in my heart to ALWAYS do better. In Charlenni’s case I feel like this was a failure on everyone’s part. The step-mother, who was simply adding fuel to the fire by continuing to beat her, should be rot in jail somewhere for helping to kill this child. Who breaks their shoulder blade?! There were several…

    Duty to Warn

Video presentation: The video clip was quite interesting I found it to be very educational as to the legal obligations of therapists in the mental health field. There were issues that were brought up that were quite important, such as therapists need to understand confidentiality, privileged information, and a therapists responsibility related to reporting suspected child abuse, elder abuse, and/or suicidal ideations, and possibly the most important of them all is a therapists duty to warn. The first case they were focusing on was the case related to a child that was presented in the ER and seen by Nurse Brown and now because she did not report any suspected child abuse she was charged with a crime. The statement that the character Constance Brandis made was quite succinct; Nurse Brown noted “the child was brought in unconscious and undiagnosed or undetermined distress. She notes bruises, she asked foster mother about them, she gets an explanation, and she buys it. Remember, this is a licensed foster care mother. The boy is treated at the hospital, recovers and then goes home” (Psychotherapy, 2008). After this statement the question that this character had was definitely the appropriate question she said “is Nurse Brown a criminal who might be put in jail was she breaking the law should she be punished”(Psychotherapy, 2008).…

    Child Protective Services

    • 1465 Words
    • 6 Pages

Child Protective Services (CPS) is a complex system of assessments, investigations, and conclusions. CPS is the central agency in each communities child abuse and neglect service system. It is responsible for ensuring that preventative, investigative, and treatment services are available to children and families endangered by child abuse and neglect. As a result, CPS workers must perform a variety of functions when responding to situations of child maltreatment and play a variety of roles throughout their involvement with child protective clients. Reporting a suspective case of child maltreatment to the local CPS agency (or a family member’s own request for help with the problem) initiates the CPS response process. Once the intake is completed, an investigative process is done, and then the initial assessments and services planning processes are completed. Then the stage is set for implementation of ongoing services(Schene)(1). This description of the process of child protective services sounds acceptable and workable. However, an increasing number of child abuse and neglect cases have presented themselves in recent years. According to Jane Waldfogel, a writer for Child Welfare, about three million children were reported to the CPS in 1997, a more than fourfold increase over the number reported just 20 years earlier. In our society today, with increased violence and agitation the number has risen dramatically again. SHE ALSO…

Within the article, the writer stated that misleading documents had been issued about the Child Development Agency (CDA) officers taking children in need of care and protection to police lock ups. Nevertheless, despite the fact that they say the documents were misleading, the Minister of Youth and Culture, Lisa Hanna, is demanding full explanation for this so called misunderstanding. She indents to order a process audit of the CDA to verify how reports of children, being accused of crime, can be held in adult housing (issued by the Sunday gleaner) can be right. Similar documents could also be seen stating that children were being forced to sojourn in police custodies for over two weeks. The Detention and Courts Division of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) organized the names of the children who were reported taken from abusive homes and remands them to the walls of the horrifying police cells. This document showed how CDA officials allowed this to transpire. Conversely, Carla Francis Edie, chief executive officer of the CDA, among others declares that the document is incorrect.…
