Nathanial Hawthorne's Young Goodman Brown

The story “Young Goodman Brown” by Nathanial Hawthorne is a story about a young man named Goodman Brown who lives with his wife, Faith, and they live in Salem Massachusetts. The story is around the time with the Salem witch trials and the fear of the devil. As the story begins Goodman Brown is about to go out of town and Faith begs him not to go. As Goodman Brown continues on his adventure he goes to a dark forest where he encounters these strange things. The dark forest is a perfect place for witches and devil spawns to lurk, this should be the last place that Goodman Brown should go. These encounters make him question his thoughts and feelings about leaving his wife. These strange occurrences start to mess with Goodman Brown’s emotions and
make him wish he had never gone on his journey in the first place. Even when Goodman Brown returns these strange encounters continue to have a huge impact on him.

The story “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman is a story that follows this woman and her husband. The woman and her husband end up renting this old mansion that hasn’t been used for a while. The woman seems to have depression and her husband is a doctor and thinks that her wife is making progress when staying in this house. The woman is in this room that seems to be isolated from society and she is alone. I think that since the woman is depressed that she shouldn’t be locked in this room all alone. Her husband should try to find things that make her happy rather than leaving her alone. There is nothing in this room except for the yellow wallpaper which makes her only think about the wallpaper. The wallpaper doesn’t seem to cheer up the woman and makes her thoughts driver her in a deeper hole of depression.
