Throughout American history, there are different stories of how the colonies were founded, by whom they were founded, and what became of them once they were founded. With all these stories historians, have been able to come up with a very close timeline to when the events occurred and how they occurred, although with every founding of a new land comes a series of myths. Four myths that are commonly perceived as true with the founding of America are (1) everyone who came to America was coming so they could practice their own religious beliefs, (2) the earliest settlers came with their families and from the middle class of the English society, (3) the class system was forgotten in America, it was indeed the land of the free where everyone has…
How do you respond to conflict, do you use positivity or negativity? When dealing with conflict, more than often, individuals will resort to aggression. However, is that the best way? Events such as the Holocaust and the bombing of Hiroshima all test us on how we react. As shown in books Dear Mrs. Breed, Maus, and The Diary of Anne Frank, positivity is a way to go when dealing with loss/war. Positive thinking is one of the best ways to respond to conflict.…

A Comparison in the theme of Sin between "The Scarlet Letter" and "The Minister's Black Veil" by Nathaniel Hawthorne…
In the Salem Witch Trials Abigail, Betty, Mary, and Mercy were the only evidence needed to get convicted in the adapted play The Crucible by Arthur Miller. It became their word against yours and the girls had all the power because they were well trusted within the community. The same goes for this news story about José Antonio Zúñiga, or known more commonly as his nickname Toño, he was sentenced to jail for up to 20 years for a crime he did not commit due to no one doing a follow up on his story and just assuming that the police caught the right guy. In today’s society there are many flaws in the legal system, whether it is in Salem in the 1600s or in today’s time in Mexico; people will assume the worst of the situation and it may not be the…
In "The Scarlet Letter" by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Dimmesdale confronts the conflict between passion and his responsibilities by taking out his emotions on himself so that he can keep his obligation to his congregation by being a pure priest. The conflict takes up a great magnitude of Dimmesdale's energy and in the end instigates his demise. The conflict between passion and responsibility is not only evident in the Scarlet Letter, but throughout many noteworthy works of literature. Hawthorne shows this recurring theme throughout the novel, and it is very evident in the book as a whole, but especially in the scenes involving the scaffold, a public form of punishment.…
In American literature, some female writers portrayed the roles of women in their writings. Women were seen only as caregivers of their homes, husbands, and children in the eighteenth century and earlier. Anne Bradstreet and Abigail Adams were women writers whom played similar roles in the different century they lived in. Women of the seventeenth and eighteenth century were deprived the chance to be more than just a woman. Through Anne Bradstreet’s poem The Prologue and the letters of Abigail Adams, readers perceive the roles the women played in their times. In ‘‘Rights of Woman’’ and the Problem of Power, written by Andrew Cayton, he speaks on the political problem side of women’s rights and tries to encourage people to think of the value all people obtain. Andrew Cayton’s article relates to Anne Bradstreet’s The Prologue and Abigail Adams’ letters to John Adams because it refers to the roles and rights of women just as they do.…
The book The Crucible written by Arthur Miller takes place in the 1670's in Salem, Massachusetts. The book is about the event better known as “The Salem Witch Trials” that happened when a girl named Abby had a seizure and the people of Salem believed that she was cursed by a witch. So, Abby decided to take an advantage of what the people of Salem thought, she then began to chose people she did not like or what other people had against and she would call the people out as a witch. She just had to point her finger at someone and they would believe her. The people of Salem had two choices; they could either confess, sign a paper that went on the church's front door to show that they are choosing to be clean of witchery, or they could confess…
Nathaniel Hawthorne had many obstacles to overcome as a child. Hawthorne was born in Salem, Massachusetts on July 4, 1804 (American Writers 223). During this time period, Hawthorne witnessed the fall of Salem due to the Embargo Act. It caused the shipbuilding industry to slowly diminish which immensely impacted Hawthorne’s family since his father was a shipbuilder. Suddenly, at the age of four, Hawthorne lost his father forcing his family (now consisting of his mother and siblings) to move in with his uncle. Hawthorne, however, still considered Salem as his hometown because his family was a prominent throughout the society for generations. In fact, one of Hawthorne’s ancestor was held in such high regard that he was seated as one of the judges…
The scarlet “A” represents adultery. It was an unforgivable sin for the Puritan community, because it’s considers as breaking God’s Law. But she did not give up her life. Instead, she thought wearing the “A” the rest of her life will always remind her what she did, and it will help her to cleanse her soul from her sin. For example, “-- was that SCARLET LETTER, so fantastically embroidered and illuminated upon her bosom.” (Hawthorne 46) She made the letter very visible and fancy, she accepted her punishment. However, she will have to deal with her inner struggles, because her sin will never acceptable in the Puritan community. Therefore, she was seen as a fallen woman. She will have less opportunity to talk with other people.…
Symbolism of the Scarlet Letter AIn Nathaniel Hawthorne 's The Scarlet Letter, the meaning of the letter A changes throughout the novel. This change is significant as it indicates the personal growth of the characters as well as the enlightenment of the townspeople. When the novel begins, the letter A is a symbol of sin. As the story progresses the A slowly is viewed as a symbol of Hesters strength and ability (Hawthorne Julian). By the end of the novel, the letter A has undergone a complete metamorphosis and represents the respect that Hester has for herself.…
In many of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s writings he focuses on the inner life of the Christian, such as the effects of sin, guilt, and temptation. He was a Puritan Calvinist, but thought some of those beliefs had a tendency to judge people’s behavior on the surface. He had a relative who was a judge during the Salem Witch trials. A quote from Hawthorne shows us some of his beliefs. “Christian faith is a grand cathedral, with divinely pictured windows. Standing without, you can see no glory, nor can imagine any, but standing within, every ray of light reveals a harmony of unspeakable splendors.”…
Nathaniel Hawthorne is often considered a profoundly Christian writer. He found pride the root sin. Faith in nature was only easy optimism. What he did best was to translate the heavy moral burden of life into the substance of his imagination. Personally, I think that it would be fair to consider Hawthorn a Christian writer with many characteristics seeing in humanist writers. There could be a fine line, but if we take into consideration that the base of his writing comes from a puritan background, Hawthorn's writing goes far more into the moral struggles within a society than the Christian struggles or soul saving.…
