A trend with professional football players in the past year has been to not observe the full amount of respect( standing, out on the field, right hand on heart) while the national anthem is playing. The purpose of this action is not to disrespect America in any way, but to spread awareness of the issues crippling our country. In a quote from Stephen Curry used in the article, “By acting and not going, hopefully, that will inspire some change when it comes to what we tolerate in this country and what is accepted and what we turn a blind eye to.“ He articulates that on occasion it is necessary to be …show more content…
disrespectful to our home to see change arise. It is vital that we care. The other topic of focus was our President, Donald Trump.
One thing I noticed about the two articles is that they were from sources contrasting politically. This is helpful as negative bias surrounding our president is common. A quote from Donald Trump’s twitter as told by the article is, “ Great solidarity for our national anthem and our country. Standing with locked arms is good, kneeling is not acceptable.” What he is trying to say is that it is acceptable to protest the things that happen in your motherland, but it is not permissible to disrespect it. He, of course, has a vastly different perspective, as he is a person in authority over a country in which he cares deeply about, as opposed to the football players who are actively making strides against the injustice that sweeps across our
nation.
In conclusion, the debate of whether to sit or stand or kneel during our nation's anthem is fought by people who care. They care about both our country, its honor, and dignity, but also, the oppressed people that live under its flag. I do not believe there is a right answer. But I do believe it is imperative that each man follows his conscience. That is what gives us a soul, and that is why we care.
