“The Book of Basketball: The NBA According to the Sports Guy” by Bill Simmons, was a book only the Sports Guy could write. Save a few hundred pages for Simmons to inform the readers on how he became the basketball and Celtics fan he is today (hint: it was his dad choosing between a motorcycle and season tickets to the Celtics), why as a child he called himself Jabaal Abdul-Simmons, footnotes galore, his hatred for Isiah Thomas and Wilt Chamberlain, and many of the greatest “What-if’s” in basketball history. Other than that, Bill Simmons uses this behemoth of a book to indulge on his version of “The Secret” of basketball, winning championships, and gives his take on how the NBA Hall of Fame should be constructed. In a pyramid style ranking with five levels Bill Simmons has who he thinks should be where, as of 2009, and each level getting smaller and smaller due to the higher standard. It all ends with the 12 best of all time, sitting atop the pyramid like kings with Michael Jordan number one. Again there was no one other than Simmons to write this book. “You could dress me red, drop in into a Crips neighborhood, tell me that I have 12 minutes to start a high-caliber NBA conversation before somebody puts a cap in my ass...and I would…

He led the National League in stolen bases in 1947 with 29. In 1949, Robinson had a very successful year again winning the National League Most Valuable Player; lead with the highest batting average of .324, most stolen bases (37), and being selected to the All-Star Team. In 1955, he was a World Series Champion for the Brooklyn Dodgers. Robinson was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962 becoming the first African American to receive this award. Robinson was a great baseball player but many believe he was not the best African American to play the game. His career batting average was .311 with the Brooklyn Dodgers and he led them to 6 World Series and 1 World Series Championship within a 10-year span. The number 42 is very significant in baseball today because that is the number Robinson wore. Every team in the MLB today is retired and cannot be worn by any player in the MLB. The day April 15 is known to be “Jackie Robinson Day,” on this day all the players and umpires wear the number 42 on their jerseys in remembrance of…

The 1985 Bears super bowl champion team really proves what hard work and dedication can lead to. This win obviously meant a lot to the many men on the field, and for the entire Chicago bears fan base. Coach Ditka put together an almost unstoppable offensive attack and their defensive coordinator Buddy Ryan made their defense arguably the best defense of all time. Proving how much impact the right coaching can have on a team, and also how the Bears could not have won without this superb coaching. Lastly, the struggle, and perseverance it takes to become one of the best teams of all time is unreal. Through the battles of the season the team became stronger and came out on top like true…

To some, including myself, baseball is the greatest sport that has ever been played. It is a game played by two opposing teams made of multiple players, but only nine players per team play at the same time. To be part of one of the thirty teams that get to play professional baseball, a player has to play the game extremely well (www.baseballhalloffame.com). When a player plays the game better than most have played he gets rewarded, usually with lots of money in a big contract. Then there are those rare players, the 244 elite players of the game that have already been inducted into the Hall of Fame. Being inducted in the Hall of Fame is the utmost of baseball fame. The players listed are remembered forever. This brings me to my argument. Pete Rose should be allowed induction into the Hall of Fame.…
