National History Day Controversy
The topic my partner and I have based the National History Day Project on is the Mayan Calender system compared to the Hopi Indian Tribe system. The reason I liked this topic is because it is currently 2012 and so the the world ending is a huge controversy in society. I am very interested in the subject and wished to do deeper research on the predictions by not only the Ancient Civilization of the Mayans. I have recently discovered the Maya people are not the only people with these beliefs and so I have grown more fascinated. The idea of basing our project on this topic was actually the first thing to cross my mind when we were informed of the project, so we decided it fit with everything this year.

I believe one good idea for Hispanic Heritage Month would be to expand and seek co- sponsorship from different organizations on campus to alleviate the costs that come along with events and receive different perspectives of how an events should be ran. Also, a greater number of organizations would mean a larger audience and more volunteers and participants to aid with development of an event. Since I’m applying for the Assistant Pageant Director, high quality photos should be taken at the event by asking other students if they have a professional camera, I own one of these type of cameras, and also setting up a photo booth area with a wide range of props. Also, having a hashtag for the event such as #HHMPageant or #MrHSA&MsHSA to increase…

Why when most people think of Columbus Day, they think of Christopher Columbus and nothing about the other races involved with the New World. In my opinion, Columbus Day should be changed to Dia De La Raza. Dia De La Raza means the day of the races and makes more sense for the replacement of Columbus Day because it celebrates all of the races involved with the New World. Three reasons Columbus Day should be called Dia De La Raza is because this day recognizes all the races that came to the New World, recognizes the natives of the New World and recognizes the African slaves that built the New World.…

Most people in the United States celebrate the 4th of July, but do you know exactly why the holiday is so important to our country? Imagine how you would feel if someone older than you (maybe an older sister or brother) kept telling you what to do all of the time and kept taking more and more of your allowance. That is how the colonists felt in the years leading up to 1776. Great Britain kept trying to make the colonists follow more rules and pay higher taxes. People started getting mad and began making plans to be able to make their own rules. They no longer wanted Great Britain to be able to tell them what to do, so they decided to tell Great Britain that they were becoming an independent country. (To…

Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492. Many people know this saying and the story behind it. Everyone knows who Columbus is and what he did. Although, they do not know the horrible things that went on when he reached the Americas. Most people know the story of how he thought the earth was flat and how he could get to India by moving west across the ocean. They know he reached the Americas and thought it was India. However, this is not the whole story. We celebrate Columbus Day in honor of him finding the Americas. Even though he did find the Americas, does not mean what happened when he got to the Americas were all good things. We should not celebrate Columbus Day because he treated the Native Americans horribly, he took men, women, and children as slaves over to Europe, and he would do…

    Cracking the Myan Code

Watching the NOVA special Cracking the Maya Code made me realize a lot of things about the Maya’s and about their language that I had never before known. I thought it was very interesting how they figured out the Dresden codex correlated to a time the universe had started. Even more than that, they correlated that to our calendar, to help them date the hieroglyphics that they found. I think it is really interesting how they recreated what the Maya cities would have looked like, and how the civilizations would have been. I think one of the most important discoveries described in the video though was the one stilla of the Mayans has historical relevance. This discovery helped the archeologists to put together a much better picture of history and of life in Maya time. It is as close to written document as the historians are going to get, which makes it so cool that they found this discovery.…

Should Columbus be celebrated due to his “discovery” of “New World” – America Land? This is a controversial topic. The detractors of Columbus thinks he is the major factor that Native American were decimated after he “discovered” America Land. There was no need from Native American to be discovered at that time. In the essay ‘Rethinking History Class on Columbus Day’, the author is able to argue that Columbus Day is a controversial issue by providing many sources that prove that people have very different opinions of the holiday. He overwhelms the readers with a collection of facts, stories, and records of Christopher Columbus; in fact, the essay seems like a research paper by manner because it is a compilation of sources. The author does not include any opinions, instead he uses sources, twenty-one to be exact, that support and rebut whether Columbus Day should exist. By doing so, the author allows the readers to conceive their own judgments. Therefore, there will be contrasting attitudes towards Columbus Day made by the readers. The author’s…

    Why Abolish Columbus Day?

Columbus Day should be abolished because he was not the first explorer to arrive in the Americas. Many explorers before him landed there, but he was the first to conquer the native people and either enslave or kill them. In document 2, Online Petition, it states that the American Indians had already been living there for around 10,000 years. Even if Columbus was the first to arrive in the Americas, he was not the discoverer. To say Columbus is entirely falsely praised would be stubborn and incorrect, because he was the first European to stay and colonize the land. Through this process, he did found America, but at the same time killed nearly three million people, according to document 6, Howard Zinn, whether they be Native Americans or Africans. Document 3, Mysterious History of Columbus, that he alone challenged the unknown sea and as a result, there was a continent that didn’t have kings. This land may not have had kings, but similarly it had slave traders who treated the slaves like animals.…

Is this really true, did Christopher Columbus really discover America? If you thought Christopher Columbus discovered America, you were wrong! He did not discover America! On the scorching, summer day of August 28, 1963, thousands of integration-supporters gathered to demonstrate their yearning for equality. Today, we are reminded of the ambition and courage of the people present during this march because its intention was achieved. The current youth assume that because they do not experience similar practices used before the March, for example segregated restrooms or segregated schools, segregation does not occur. Truthfully, the March achieved tremendous accomplishments yet many of the issues fought for during the March on Washington still remain unsettled.…

You may have learned about the March on Washington in school, or you may have overheard your parents talking about it. "What is it exactly, and how did it make a difference in the world?" you may be thinking. Well, I know and am excited to teach you. The March on Washington occurred on August 28, 1963 and is remembered as a great day for African American rights in the United States. "The idea of a major demonstration in Washington, in the nation's capital, that brought together all of the major civil rights organizations would be a statement very different from what was happening around the country,"-Harry Rubinstein. Harry Rubinstein is correct and Martin Luther King Jr. and other civil rights leaders decided to have another march on Washington…

After some researching, It has become clear that Columbus Day is actually quite controversial in regards to whether or not he should be celebrated. Firstly, one of the main points I noticed was his instigation and condoning of slave trade. While I certainly agree that this was terrible, it is also true that it was a cultural norm at this time. Additionally, even though Columbus wasn’ the first to discover America, he did help bridge the gap between the old and new world which led to the exchange of cultures, products, etc. This was important for the development and spread of the western civilizations. It is likely that without his brave efforts, the world would not be the place it is today. Overall, while it may not be necessary to deem an…

    Abolish Columbus Day

    • 975 Words

Columbus Day has regarded Christopher Columbus as a hero for his “discovery” of America. In parts of America there are big Columbus Day celebrations and parades; even the schools are closed so the children may experience the festivities. The fact of the matter is that Columbus Day does not celebrate the actual “accomplishments” of Columbus, but celebrates the PG story of Columbus that school teachers would tell elementary school children in the form of a rhyme or song. The celebration of Columbus Day glorifies the colonial conquest, enslavement, and murder of indigenous people by Europeans and should be wiped off the books of American national holidays because Christopher Columbus is not a great Italian explorer who discovered America and Columbus’ exploration led the massive genocide of the indigenous people.…
