Outside of school, I have been in an FLL Robotics team for the past four years, and won two teamwork awards and a robot design award in the regional competition. In addition, I have been involved in Cub Scouts and the Boy Scouts of America since second grade.

We go on camping trips once every month, and if a patrol leader isn’t around I take charge until he returns. Assistant patrol leaders and the other scouts in leadership positions have the responsibility of planning our weekly meetings, camping trips, and all other events we participate in. Over the course of two years I have attained 9 merit badges, including citizenship in the world, nation, and community. I have done community service through boy scouts by engaging in the Big Sweep which helps elderly people clean their yards throughout the fall season, rebuilding the sports equipment room in Academy of our Lady, and assisting with plant sales. Our team had to wire, build, and program in an unfamiliar IDE. In order to make all of the function of SpongeBob work, soldering was required. This was difficult because it has to be done very precisely. Building became a challenge when we were not given any dimensions or designs to go off of. This made us create our own. Finally, programming stretched the abilities of our programmers because they were working in an unfamiliar environment and with some components that they had never used before. Despite the fact that we hit many road bumps along the way, this project helped us further many skills that are essential to robotics. We expanded our knowledge of engineering and design and in doing so we made someone’s day…

In 2012 the team put together “Robo-Thanksgiving” for the first time after a student learned that a local assisted living complex would otherwise be given bagged lunches rather than a traditional turkey dinner. With the help of many generous parents, the students managed to organize enough food to feed over 100 residents, staff, and family members on the day before Thanksgiving. The event was successful because it brought together the families at the center as well as the team. This was the first major function the students had to come together to pull off and really brought out the unique characteristics among them. Due to its uniqueness, few resources were able to help the team when planning the event. To help future FIRST teams that wish to host similar events the Iron Lions have started a “how-to” book of all the things they have learned in the last few years. This book will be published on the Linn-Mar Robotics…

Since my early years in middle school I have been a participant in or employed by various youth organizations. My first experience and longest tenure was with the Boys and Girls Club of America in Gainesville, Florida. Through this organization, with its diverse youth population and host of challenges, I developed a passion for the advocacy of underrepresented youth and have continued to seek out opportunities to further my interest. Whether working in an educational setting as I did with AmeriCorps and the After School All-Stars or with a community based service, I have made a relentless effort to advocate for the youth that I serve.…
