Native Americans: Aztecs and Incas
Two of the biggest and greatest civilization in the Americas were the Aztecs and Incas. These two civilization were both said to be conquered by the Spanish, but it wasn't just the Spanish who conquered them. These two civilizations both fell from a combination of a weak government, lack of technology, new disease introduced by the invaders, and not being prepared for the invaders. For many centuries the Aztec civilization revolved around a ideological, social, and political system in which expansion was the cornerstone. Expansion was the cornerstone of their whole civilization, because their religion requested that a large number of human sacrifices where to be made to the gods. To get the sacrifices the Aztec went to war with other tribes in Mexico to get these human sacrifices (Conrad & Demmest 47-49) . With each conquest more sacrifices and more land was added to the Aztec kingdom. The Aztec were a strong civilization who were familiar with organized large scale war, had specialized war chiefs, and a well organized system of territorial levy in which large armies could be amassed in a short time (Age of Reconnaissance 124-125). They may have been well organized for war, but they were not prepared for internal changes in there civilization. When expansion was no longer an option there system crumbled. Without expansion they could no longer give human sacrifices in the same amount in which they use too. Upon the arrival of the Spanish the Aztec government was falling apart, and "Moctezuma II programs of internal military consolidation and administrative and social stabilization had failed" (Conrad & Demmest). When the Aztec's first met the Spanish they were amazed by them. The Spanish used the Aztec's own legends to take advantage of them and gain the upper hand. Other disadvantages that the Aztecs had was the need to take prisoner to sacrifice, they were not untied with other tribes (Spanish were able to unite with other tribes

Montezuma, who was the ruler of the Aztecs, had a funny feeling about them. Not too long after they arrived, the Aztecs realized that the Spanish could be killed just like their other enemies, so they went to war. They caught some of the Spanish, killed some of them, even ate some. The Spanish won out because of their preparation, and because they brought so many diseases with them, it killed some of the Aztecs as well. The Spanish came to the Aztecs land, and the Aztecs thought that this was the 'God' that they had been waiting for. They treated the Spanish with riches and lavish food, as they would a God. They only treated them to the finest of treasures because they were sure this was what they were looking for. The Spanish reported that they 'were sickened by the people's shocking routines', which was mentioning toward the sacrifice they saw. Then, when the Spanish tried to take advantage of what the Aztecs had given them, they realized they weren’t the Gods they thought they were looking for. So they cut them off. Conversely, the Spaniards had the horses, firearms, and they had most of the people of the Aztec society on their side. With that being said, the Spaniards didn’t like how the Aztec land was being run. With these people and the Spanish's knowledge expansions, they overthrew the Aztec Empire. After the Aztecs were conquered by the Spaniards, they were turned into…

The advancement in the Inca and Aztec was very great in religion, technology and trade throughout their empire. Religion, taking a major part in both societies, was one of the highlighting themes of empire development being the root of advanced evolving features. The Aztec Empire, taking part in a devoted polytheistic religion, they practiced many rituals the main one being sacrifice. Documents 2 and 5 demonstrate the importance of sacrifice being shown in decorations on pyramids for the purpose as well as foreign drawings. During this period of time, the Aztecs, undisturbed by any other foreign religious influences, remained very loyal, as well as afraid, of their gods for the reason that their gods seemed to have an effect on everything human sacrifice was one of the most powerful ways the Aztecs felt they could connect with their gods. However once the Americas began being revealed, Christianity began taking it's place. Because document 5 was an observation made by a foreign monk to sacrificial rituals he might have pictured it as a vicious and brutal obsession not addressing how important and vital it would have been to a native. The Inca, in contrast, worshiped a less number of gods than the Aztec did yet they were parallel to the Aztec's importance of religion. As shown in The First New Chronicle and Good Government, Incas viewed Christianity as meaningless not accepting it as a realistic religion. "And the Inca said: "Well, why doesn't it tell me? The book doesn't even talk to me!" " (Document 12) For the duration of the Incan Empire religion always remained key, shielded by the people of the empire. They had a dislike of Christianity because it was an interfering outside force not welcomed gracefully into the Incan Empire; furthermore Christianity did not convince them. Ayala, being a foreigner, describes the incident as if it were right, being Christianity, versus wrong, being the Incan religion, neglecting the significance the Inca's…
