Naturalistic Observation

Naturalistic observation My observation locations are Starbucks and restaurant. I chose them as my observation location because those are the places where people normally talk, study, socialize and interact in a casual manner.
Woman & Woman The first pair I observed is woman and woman. It was in the Starbucks, two Korean women around 19 years old are standing on the line to buy coffee. Neither of them were talking on the cell phone and the one in the front (woman A) turned around to face the other one (woman B). Women A were arm crossed in a relax manner, woman B held her keys with her right hand and her wallet on the other hand. I guess woman A were talking about something really funny because they were both laughing after she said something. Between the moments where right after woman A finished her talking and before they started laughing, woman A always lightly and quickly touched woman B’s arm. They were standing very close to each other and after they bought the coffee, they sat at one table. They faced to each other and both of them held their coffee and slightly leaned forward to each other while they were talking. They both looked confident and enjoyed about the discussion and did listen to each other with concentration and attention. No matter they were standing up or sitting down, their body posture were random, relax and totally open to each other. They looked at each other in a direct gaze almost all the time, I think the only time they did not looked at each other directly was when they were trying to recall something while they were talking. Although I didn’t know what they were talking, based on their nonverbal movements, I think self- disclosure exists in their discussion; for example, when woman B were talking something that she weren’t so happy about, she would first use her right hand to touch her breast and then reach out the hand.
Man & Man I observed this pair in a Chinese restaurant. Actually there

I conducted a Naturalistic Observation Study to examine some of the possible effects of alcohol consumption on the behavior of young adults. According to K. Over the past few decades, socially unacceptable behavior has become more acceptable. People have become so lazy that they put little to no effort in their appearance and don’t even care what anyone else thinks of it. The most common thing people do to prove how lazy and shameless they are is go out in their pajamas. Forty years ago, any woman wouldn't be caught dead at a supermarket in her nightgown. Yet now, more often than not people shop in the middle of the day in their pajamas. A study was conducted to figure out just how many people would shop in sleepwear. The people entering Walmart in the middle of the day were checked to see if they were wearing pajamas.…

When I conduct observations, I notice that the angry young woman makes efforts to restrain her anger and does not shout at the man. If she were at home, she would not have been so restrained. The restaurant is a public space and interactions in restaurants are conditioned by manners and customs (Yan, 2005). When dining out, people need to act in accord with the environment. It is absolutely impolite to shout in public places. However, the restaurant is a casual rather than formal dining place and makes people relaxed and comfortable.…

The purpose of this study was to conduct observations, using two different methods, on children, between the ages of 4-5, to understand their emotional behaviors in a social and learning environment as well as determining which method of observation was more reliable. There are different methods of conducting observations, but two main ones include naturalistic observation and experimental observation. A naturalistic observation method is when a researcher studies a person or group in their natural environment or setting; the behavior that is observed is one that occurs in a person’s everyday life. In contrast, an experimental observation method is when a researcher is studying a specific behavior in a laboratory-like environment.…

“Naturalistic Observation is a research method commonly used by psychologists and other social scientists. This technique involves observing subjects in their natural environment. This type of research is often utilized in situations where conducting lab research is unrealistic, cost prohibitive or would unduly affect the subject's behavior” (verywell.com). My experiment is an example of naturalistic observation because I watched and listened to conversations without interjecting myself or revealing to the subjects that I was observing them. I sat in Starbucks for about an hour listening to a conversation between three men sitting behind me and watching a conversation happening between two people sitting outside. I went to Starbucks at 4:00…

While I was at the Ontario mills mall I saw a group of two females interacting with each other. I would say they were between the ages of eighteen and twenty-one, both Caucasian. The two of them were a fair distance as they were walking together. They walked side by side but I noticed them stop and discuss something standing face to face. It seemed as though one was relieved to hear some kind of news and gave the other a hug. This was the only touch that I saw. During the conversation that they had, their gaze was quite attentive, as it seemed it was of great importance. Other than that, they didn’t look at each other long so I would say they were good friends.…

I began my observations in one of my favourite Coffee shops at 2.55 PM and finished around 3.45 on a Wednesday in late August. In order to ‘activate’ my role of participant observer, I ordered a caramel favoured coffee together with my friend, whom I had brought along to help me observe. I sat opposite the serving counter, where two female servants were now making my coffee, over in one of the corners so my observation wouldn’t be too obvious. Lit candles were placed on all tables and background music was playing, creating a cosy and relaxed atmosphere. Wondering whether this would affect my targets, I started to observe.…
