For instance, due to the rise of social Darwinism, "By 1954, anthropologist Ashley Montagu was declaring that mankind has 'no instincts because everything he is and has become he has learned, acquired, from his culture'" (Cowley). This researcher claims that instincts, reactions to situations dependent on genetics, are less important than the upbringing of an individual. Montagu states that all aspects of a person's personality is dependent on their enviroment. In addition, in a statement by Dr. Nancy Andreasen, Chair of Psychiatry & Director of the Mental Health Clinical Research Center, University of Iowa, "Half of the human beings in history are women, for example, but we have had so few women recognized for their genius. How many were held back by societal influences, similar to the ones I encountered and dared to ignore?" (Andreasen). Due to societal influences, many individuals, especially women, are forced to hold back in order to conform to society. Environments are important in the shaping of a person's personality because it affects how they will carry themselves in society. A person's hereditary background lays a foundation for their personality. Meanwhile, the bringing up of an individual builds upon this foundation to form their personality. Both factors work hand in hand, without one overpowering the other to form a person' personality.
