Apartheid is a policy of segregation and separation based on races. The policy was applied by the racist South Africa white regime to facilitate white minority dominance in political, social, and economic opportunities. Under apartheid people of different races were not allowed to mix either in residential or social places. It involved the discriminatory treatment of black people, who where lowly-salaried than their white counterpart for the same job done. Most significantly, African was excluded from participation and in the government of South Africa. People of European origin dominated the government.
According to Shillington K (1988) History of South Africa. The year 1948, when the national party won an over roll majority in the white parliament, has often been seen as a turning point in South Africa history. The national part comes to power with a program for what they called apartheid (separation). In fact the apartheid lows which had discriminated against blacks ever since 1910 and even earlier. The difference after 1948 was that the overall aims of the government policy were more clearly formulated. And the National party’s parliamentary majority ensured that their legislation was pushed through with even more determination. According to Wikipedia the free in encyclopedia the word apartheid as Africa name means ‘apartness ’was a political and social system in south Africa while it was under white minority rule. This was in use in 20c, from 1948 to 1994. In the system the people of South Africa were divided by their race and the races were forced to live apart from each. There were laws that kept up the racial separation. The system of apartheid in South Africa was banned in 1994. The last president under apartheid was Frederik Willeum de Klert. After this Mandela become the first black president.
The following are the ways through which the black South Africa copy with the apartheid policies in South Africa; According to Spodek H (2006), Formation of difference political parties; the black South Africa copy with the apartheid by forming different political parties such as the African National congress (ANC). This political part for Africans, encourage peacefully resistance to discriminatory laws of apartheid. The ANC issues a freedom charter that state, ‘South Africa belongs to all who live in it, black and white, and that no government can justly claim authority unless it is based on the will of the people’. The government reacts by arresting people and passing more repressive lows. According to Wikipedia the Free Encyclopedia, African refuses to work in white working areas especially in the mining places. This is due to low wages that they receive from their master. For example, in 1946, African mining workers are paid twelve times less than their white counterparts and are forced to do the most dangerous jobs. Over 75000 African go on strike in support of higher wages. Police use violence to force the unarmed works back to their jobs. Over 1000 workers were injured or killed.
The all-black African student’s organization, under the leadership of Steven Biko, helps unify student through the black consciousness movement. This has great influence on the Soweto upraise in 1976. People in Soweto riot and demonstrate against discrimination and instruction in South Africa. The police react with gunfire. 575 people were killed and thousands are injured and arrested. Steven Biko is beaten and left in jail to die from his injuries. Protesters against apartheid link arms in a show of resistance. (www.un.org/../race-b-at-print.asp) African refused to carry identification booklets; these were containing their names, addresses, fingerprints and other information. African were stopped and harassed for their passes. Between 1948 and 1973, over ten million Africans were arrested because their passes were not in order. Burning pass book become a common form of protest. In 1960s a large group of black in town of Sharpeville refused to carry their passes. The government declares a state of emergency and responds with fines, imprisonment, and whippings. (www.un.org/../race-b-at-print.asp) Chief Albert Luthulu, the ANC leader, organizes a protest campaign in which black African stopped to work on certain days. In 1952 African attempted a systematic beach of the laws by entering coast and other places reserved for white. Over 800 black were arrested and many were flogged. Luthulu was put jail for a time, and the campaign was called off. Introduction of different African media, such media were used to make them aware of the ongoing situation. Such media including; news papers such as Abantu- Batho, and popularized a number of songs and slogans which have become part of the fabric of African political life in South Africa. In other hand the authors, were also opposing the effect of apartheid in South Africa. Alan Paton for example wrote ‘Cry the Beloved Country’, calling for the human races relation. He also published a series of criticism of apartheid in 1950s and 60s. By concluding, apartheid police was not only opposed by the black south African only but also other people and the government around the world launch an international campaign to boycott (not to do business with) south Africa. Some countries ban the import of South Africa products, and citizen of many countries pressure major companies to pull out of South Africa.
