Nazi Propaganda Film Analysis

As someone who hopes to be a filmmaker one day, I was especially interested in the conversations about the Frankfurt School and how culture affects society. I think it is important to recognize, especially today, that popular culture is where many people get their ideas and visions of society, both as it currently is and how it ought to be. I think recognizing the relationship between civil society and the political society is important and I wish more artists were thinking about it. I was especially interested in the role that Nazi propaganda films played in the building and maintenance of power before and after Hitler took power. But the thing that I find most interesting about the Frankfurt School is their focus not just in the explicit propaganda films, but also the popular blockbusters and crowd pleasers of Weimar era Germany. These films seem escapist and apolitical, especially compared to the propaganda films, but I think it is important to look at what, despite their seemingly apolitical nature, these films say about German society at the time.
