The most noticeable bottleneck in the current process/system is the Drying station. The maximum input of to the Drying station is around 1050bbls/hr, but it can only process maximum of 600bbls/hr. Because the input rate exceeds the maximum capacity of the Drying station, waiting time exists.
Another noticeable bottleneck are the jumbo separators. The input rate for this bottleneck is 20 trucks/hr, which exceeds the station’s maximum capacity of 16 trucks/hr.
Q4
The trucks wait due to a certain bottleneck in the current system. Because the Drying station is the bottleneck of the process, we will consider only the process related to wet berries in order to approximate the time the trucks have to wait.
By 10 a.m. holding bins 17-24 (used for either wet or dry berries) and holding bins 25-27 (used for wet berries) are filled with berries.
Holding bins 1-16 (used for dry berries only) may not be used for wet berries; thus, the trucks have to wait.
After 7 p.m., berries are no longer received.
Rate of Arrival = 1500bbls/her = 20*75 = 1500 bbls/hour = 20 trucks/hr (since the average truck delivery is 75 bbls)
Total number of trucks that arrived = 12 hours*(20 trucks/hr*70%) = 168 trucks
Total waiting hours = Sum up (# Trucks Waiting (field/column shown above)) = 552
Average waiting number of hours per truck 552/168 = 3.28 hrs/truck
