NCC Case Question 3 And 4
Q3
The most noticeable bottleneck in the current process/system is the Drying station. The maximum input of to the Drying station is around 1050bbls/hr, but it can only process maximum of 600bbls/hr. Because the input rate exceeds the maximum capacity of the Drying station, waiting time exists.
Another noticeable bottleneck are the jumbo separators. The input rate for this bottleneck is 20 trucks/hr, which exceeds the station’s maximum capacity of 16 trucks/hr.
Q4
The trucks wait due to a certain bottleneck in the current system. Because the Drying station is the bottleneck of the process, we will consider only the process related to wet berries in order to approximate the time the trucks have to wait.
By 10 a.m. holding bins 17-24 (used for either wet or dry berries) and holding bins 25-27 (used for wet berries) are filled with berries.
Holding bins 1-16 (used for dry berries only) may not be used for wet berries; thus, the trucks have to wait.
After 7 p.m., berries are no longer received.
Rate of Arrival = 1500bbls/her = 20*75 = 1500 bbls/hour = 20 trucks/hr (since the average truck delivery is 75 bbls)
Total number of trucks that arrived = 12 hours*(20 trucks/hr*70%) = 168 trucks
Total waiting hours = Sum up (# Trucks Waiting (field/column shown above)) = 552
Average waiting number of hours per truck 552/168 = 3.28 hrs/truck

The maximum long-term achievable throughput rate is determined by the resource with the least capacity. As different process routes are followed by dry and wet berries, there will be distinct and separate maximum achievable throughput rates for these two products. The capacity of the dryers is the bottleneck for the wet berries. Therefore, the maximum throughput for wet berries is 600 bbls/hr. As for dry berries, the separation process is the bottleneck. The maximum throughput for dry berries will therefore be 1200 bbls/hr.…

See the attached Table E which will display the shipments as they are to arrive at the facility between the hours of 7 am – 12 am. The plant operations of slaughtering the hogs will also be documented in this table beginning with the 4000 hogs that are kept nightly in the pen.…

On average, 18000 barrels arrive over the 12hr span that the business is open. This means approximately 1500 barrels of berries are input into the process per hour (18000barrels/12hrs). The capacity of the Kiwanee dumpers was given as 3000 b/hr., and I was able to calculate the implied utilization by dividing the berry input rate by the capacity(1500bbl/hr divided by 3000bbl/hr). To calculate the actual utilization of the dumpers, you must first determine the flow rate of the system. Only 25% of the berries are dry and 75% are wet. This sums to 375 dry berries per hour (1500 input/hr x.25) and 1125 wet berries per hour (1500 input x .75). The dry berries have 16 bins that hold 250 barrels a piece, adding up to a total of 4000 berries that can be stored. The wet berries have 8 bins that hold 250 barrels and 3 bins that hold 400 barrels, adding up to 3200 barrels total for storage. The capacity of the DeStoners was given as 1500bbl/hr. The implied utilization would be the input rate (1500bbl/hr) divided by the capacity (1500 bbl/hr). Since the bottleneck does…

Management’s main concern is managing the capacity of the factory in response to the complex demand pattern. Delays resulting from insufficient capacity undermine LT’s promised lead times and ultimately force LT to turn away orders. In particular, if an order’s lead time exceeds the quoted lead time, then the revenue for that order decreases linearly, from $1000 for the quoted lead time (24 hours) to $0 for the maximum lead time (72 hours).…

Harry is not able to change the capacity of the system. The capacity is determined by the bottleneck station, which is the oven baking. The bottleneck is the process that takes the longest. According to the data provided, there is 50 % of incoming berries which were wet harvested. In the absolute terms, this amounts to 750 bbls/h. The three drying machines can only handle 600 bbls/h altogether, meaning that 150 bbls of berries have to be stored in the bins each hour while waiting for the drying process. The second bottleneck is “located” at the separators. The three separating lines have the capacity to separate 1200 bbls/h, while there are 1350 bbls/h ready to be separated. Therefore, 150 bbls of dry berries have to be stores each…
