The themes of the old man at the bridge
The old man at the bridge theme of depression:-
The old man, the main characters of” the old man at the bridge story “,is full of depression and regeneration, he did not want to move on sat at the bridge without moving ,he was too tired to go any farther, also he is full of sadness and duty . when he was taking care for animals ,he forced to leave them behind because of artillery fire.
The old man at the bridge theme of peace and hope:
The birds the old man refer to pigeons, but the narrator switch these birds to dove. When he asked the old man ”Did you leave the dove cage unlocked?” dove symbol of hope and peace in a time war ,and he hoped the fascists army are not able to launch their plan.

Characters
Major character:
The protagonist is the old man he wear black dusty clothes and his gray dusty face with steel rimmed spectacles, he does not have family . Comes from san carols, and he was the last person to leave the town, doesn’t have any politics , he is too old to move and tired , and he was seventy six years old.

The story’s set in the country side of Spanish. The year is 1938 during the Spanish civil war in which the fascist army attacked peasant and republican soldiers.
The story is about old man who was setting by the bridge , full of depression, impending death, and anxious about his animals that he forced to leave them behind because of artillery fire.
The narrator finds the old man .He begins talking to the old man hometown is san carols . he was the last person leave the town .
The narrator, nervously waiting the advent of the fascist army ,he asks the old man says he begins to concern about what will happen to the animals.(a cat, four pairs of pigeons ,and two goats).
