How Young Children are Influenced by Negative TV Program
Television is one of the most prevalent media influences in children’s lives. It becomes the important part of her or his everyday life. Television provides various programs, which are very attractive to watch, not only for adults, but also for the young children. Different programs on television provide relaxation, entertainment and education. On the other hand, television programs have done a lot of negative diverse too. It happens if the television programs for the young children are not suitable for their ages. For example, it is full of violence, felony, horror and fantasy. These kinds of television programming can effects on the children’s behaviors, especially in their social life. Negative television programming influence negative childhood behaviors, lower grades and nutrition.
Television exposes young children to negative influences, and promotes negative behavior. Television shows and commercials usually show violence, alcohol, drug use and sex in a positive light. The mind of young child is like clay. It forms early impressions on what it sees, and these early impressions determine how she or he sees the world and affect her or his grown-up behavior. For example, twenty years of research has shown that young children who are more exposed to media violence behave more aggressively as kids and when they are older. They are taught by television that violence is the way to resolve conflict as when a television hero beats up a bad guy to subdue him
Moreover, television prevents young children from doing their homework, and in turn has a negative effect on their academic performance. For example, young children in the United States watch an average of three to four hours of television a day. By the time they have graduated, they will have spent more time watching television than they have in the classroom. While television can entertain, inform, and keep young children occupied, it may also influence them in undesirable ways. However, television can be a powerful teacher. Watching Sesame Street is an example of how toddlers can learn valuable lessons about racial harmony, cooperation, kindness, simple arithmetic and the alphabet through an educational television format. Some public television programs stimulate visits to the zoo, libraries, bookstores, museums and other active recreational settings, and educational videos can certainly serve as powerful prosocial teaching devices.
Television takes time away from play and exercise activities, young children who watch a lot of television are less physically fit and more likely to eat high fat and high energy snack foods. Television viewing makes a substantial contribution to obesity because prime time commercials promote unhealthy dietary practices. The fat content of advertised products exceeds the current average Canadian diet and nutritional recommendations, and most food advertising is for high calorie foods such as fast foods, candy and presweetened cereals. Commercials for healthy food make up only four percent of the food advertisements shown during children’s viewing time . The number of hours of television viewing also corresponds with an increased relative risk of higher cholesterol levels in children. Television can also contribute to eating disorders in teenage girls, who may emulate the thin role models seen on television . Eating meals while watching television should be discouraged because it may lead to less meaningful communication and, arguably, poorer eating habits.
Television viewing affects young children behavior, school performance and health in negative ways. Children watch the TV programs meant for adults, it can prove dangerous. Watching television takes away from important activities such as reading, school work, playing, exercise, family interaction.
