This essay will briefly describe Broughty Ferry East and Broughty West, with an overview of the whole of Broughty Ferry, The City of Dundee and Scotland. It will look at the characteristics of this suburb and neighbourhood statistics of the current population. This essay will also look at alcohol and its complications, the ever aging population and their health demands and the importance of healthy life styles.
Broughty Ferry is a suburb of Dundee and lies approximately 4.9 miles from the City. The beach front at Broughty Ferry has recently been renovated and now hosts a new park for children to play and socialise and places to sit along the shore.

There are also a number of semi-detached apartments located in the centre of Broughty Ferry. Throughout Broughty Ferry there is a large number of take-away establishments which cater for the local residents and the large workforce returning home from the City, (Visit Scotland, 2014) Broughty Ferry Castle and Museum are striking against the River Tay, this historic castle enables the whole family to enjoy an educational day out. The large library caters for the whole public, with many group activities and holiday clubs for children. The library groups help young mothers make friendship connections and encourage young children to read.
There is a wide range of independent shops, from wedding boutiques, kilt hiring services, many shoe shops, bakeries and butchers located in this suburb. Marks and Spencer supermarket and a small Tesco are also located here, which caters to both the local residents and the visiting tourists. With the advances in medical care and the success with new technology, the population’s life expectancy is on the increase. Whilst this might seem like a positive outcome, it brings challenges of its own. The ever aging population brings new medical challenges, from dementia to osteoporosis. "As people age they become more susceptible to disability and disease." Harmful behaviour that might start in early life can have a negative effect on health and can decrease the quality of life and can even result in death prematurely. "Poor diet and exercise can contribute to the development of chronic conditions", such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, mental health problems and respiratory diseases, (World Health Organisation, 2014) Scottish Neighbourhood Statistics, (no date) states, Broughty Ferry West has a 31.80% of pensionable aged people living in the community, whilst Broughty Ferry East has a 31.05% of pensionable aged people. Consequently, the health services in this area will need to cater to their needs. Nurses working in these communities will need to have an understanding of ill health and know how to put measures in
