The description of a set of beliefs as "liberal" or "conservative" is a task that, in history, has changed in its requirements and protocol. We would now consider beliefs to be conservative that were at the onset of the American experiment considered liberal. Free markets, limited government, and federalism were ideas that were ridiculed throughout most of the civilized countries of the west up until recent history. On the other hand, what we would now consider to be modern liberalism can’t well be described in a similar fashion: Hobbes’ style of conservatism and its antidemocratic and autocratic impulses, while always the end result of collectivist tendencies such as modern liberalism, don’t translate completely into FDR’s style of governance and the Left’s penchant for social democracy (though Hobbes would appreciate the control that central planning entails). Modern liberalism, like modern conservatism, can be traced to a form of liberal thought. In modern liberalism’s case, though, it is rooted in continental European thought such as French Revolution radicalism and subsequent collectivist ideologies (devoted more to equality and a concept of "change") than in conservatism’s bedrock, more individualist Anglo Saxon thought. Thus, when referring to "conservative" and "liberal", the reference will be to the modern manifestations of such.…
The word ‘neoliberalism’ itself would suggest that the neoliberal ideology contains some particular account of the development of the liberal ideology, or at least that they come from the same family tree. Thorsen and Lie (2009) suggests that liberalism grew to be an influential political ideology from when it began but at some point it lost its significance, only to re-emerge in the twenty-first century in a new form. When Liberalism first emerged around the time of Adam Smith and his book ‘The Wealth of Nations’ in 1776, liberalism appeared to be revolutionary but the charm soon faded so much that the term neoliberalism had to be coined, according to Thorsen and Lie (2009).…
It is often stated that the anti-welfare rhetoric of neoliberal states, is limited to social welfare by the government and not that freedom and welfare which can be derived from the market. However, such an assertion does not recognise the true nature of neoliberal rationalities.…
The first way - the gradual expansion of "deep" talks between elite groups, ie negotiations involving all the phases of the negotiation process. Conservatism is greatly associated with the need to preserve traditions, beliefs, way of life and customs. Conservatism is also contrasted with fast-paced changes. It is now formally defined as believing in values that have been long established and the traditional practices in politics and society, as according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary. The realm of conservative ideology is broad and it covers everything from the most fundamental and basic belief to the values and practices in everyday life. As for Michael Oakeshott, in his work “On Being Conservative” in the book How Conservatives Think, edited and introduced by Phillip Wallenstein Buck, his writing speaks on the physical practices and the nature of conservatism while arguing that…
For instance, the new left demanded freedom and peace now by taking immediate action while the new rights took the approach of “patience”, thinking past the present and how the present affects the future. The new left sought power in the form of actions and not so much its organizations. While the new right believed that power came from a position, political office, or a job. Unlike the liberal, the conservatives did not suffer from a generation age gap. The younger conservatives respected the older conservatives and their ideas. The younger conservatives seek the older conservatives for guidance and help. Conservatives were directed towards the white-collar employed. Anticommunist was a highly important stance for the conservative party in the 1960s. Conservatives are often described as the party that goes the old-fashion way. Conservatives also strongly believed in the idea that since everyone was different this meant that everyone should have different rewards and…
In his book The Conscience of a Liberal, Paul Krugman discusses the “progressive agenda” and its “fierce opposition. From the text, it is clear that Krugman is a strong supporter of progressivism, and is strongly against movement conservatism based on the actions of several conservatives. Based on historical context and his observations of the actions of the Republican and Democratic parties, Krugman effectively argues that the progressive agenda is highly beneficial to the overall social and economic wellbeing of the citizens of the United States and that conservatism is detrimental to progressivism. By showing the iniquities and greed of conservatism, Krugman is able to give emphasis to the importance of protecting and advocating for the…
The challenge to a variety of political and social issues distinctly characterizes the post World War II (WWII) era, from the mid 1940’s through the 1970’s, in the United States. These issues included African-American civil rights, women’s rights, the threat of Communism, and America’s continuous war effort by entering the Cold War immediately after the end to WWII. These debated issues led to the birth of multiple social movements, collectively referred to as the New Left, rooted in liberalism. In response to the New Left, a strong brand of conservatism, collectively referred to as the Right, arose to counteract these movements. Despite opposing ideology and convictions, both the New Left and the Right interchangeably used righteous language of freedom, morality, Christianity, and human rights, particularly in the issues of African-American civil rights, women’s rights, Communism, and the U.S. war effort in the Cold War, to justify and promote each of their respective agendas.…

People may wonder how effective characterization is so important in a novel. Characterization is highly vital in a novel because it’s what builds up the characters in the story. Without effective characterization, readers aren't able to receive a vivid image of the characters in the novel. Characterization also helps people get engaged with the novel. Three polarizing characters like Vera Claythorne, Philip Lombard, and General Macarthur from Agatha Christie's novel, And Then There Were None exemplify the strong character traits they have and how their character traits have an ultimate affect the decisions they make.…
Michael Oakeshott was an Englishman born into the political turbulent era of 20th century, growing up exposed to a variety of political extremism in Europe, especially National Socialism and Marxism, along with two World Wars. As a result, he developed a dislike of radical political activism. This aversion is expressed in his work “On being Conservative,” where Oakeshott offers a unique political work that, instead of suggesting a prescriptive aid or explaining a political system, simply describes the conservative mindset. By doing so, he demystifies the conservative disposition during an era in which he believes is strongly anti-conservative in order to show its necessity in the world of politics.…
James Farney describes North American conservatism as an ideology focused on reacting to progressivism, resisting any changes from the perceived natural and historical. The three major areas of change that concern conservatives are the breakdown of the community, the breakdown of laissez-faire capitalism, and the breakdown of traditional family and gender roles. Each of these concerns maps onto one of the three branches of modern conservatism: traditionalists are primarily concerned with the community, laissez-faire conservatives (fiscal conservatives) are primarily concerned with government intervention into the economy and the social conservatives are primarily concerned with the changing nature of gender and family roles. Of these three…
The idea of economic conservatism was nothing new, but the leaders of the “New Right” movement such as Barry Goldwater believed that the policies brought forth in the New Deal should be reversed. The “New Deal” ideology was that America’s big government and bureaucracy were the biggest threat to the liberties of the average American. They believed that welfare and social spending had to be cut in order to reduce the tax burden on American families and citizens. The “New Right” movement believed that the government was failing the population, an excerpt from There are No Children Here provides a great example of this “Lafeyette had grown increasingly cynical. And in a child who has not experienced enough to root his beliefs, such an attitude can create a vast emptiness. He had little to believe in. Everyone and everything was failing him. School. The Public Aid Department. His father. His older brother. The police. And now, in a sense, himself.”(pg 222 Alex Kotlowitz). The ideology was that the federal government regulations were inhibiting personal freedoms as well as economic growth. The backbone of the “New Right” movement was financially backed by big…
It‘s an issue that is difficult to isolate and its effects have an impact on the whole population at hand. Different analysis hold different views to it and thus we seek to comprehensively analyze it. In the text by Gilbert and Terrell they have tried to define how liberals and conservative have differing views in regard to policy formation CITATION Nei12 \l 1033 (Gilbert & Terrell, 2012).…
