Review Questions
1. What is the nervous system? What does it two? What two parts make up this system?It coordinates the actions of the animal and sends messages from one part of the body to another. It is composed of the brain and the spinal cord.

2. What is the gastrointestinal system? What does it do? It digests ingested food and gets rid of any waste after the food is digested.

3. What is epilepsy? What are the two different types of epilepsy? A disease of reoccurring seizures. Symptomatic or secondary epilepsy is when there is a known cause. Idiopathic or primary seizures are when there is no known cause.

4. What is hip dysplasia? Abnormal growth of the hip or elbow.

5. What are two diseases that involve the thyroid gland? Describe each disease. Hypothyroidism- Where the impaired production or distribution of the thyroid hormone. Hyperthyroidism-excessive secretion of the thyroid hormone.

Critical Thinking Questions
1. Why do you think so many dogs die from bloat? What factors influence the mortality rate of this disease? Because of how quick they can die with in the first sign of it.

2. Why is veterinary research so important to the diseases in this unit? What impact can this research have? Because if there wasn't any research going on to treat or prevent disease then animals would have a shorter life span. The research helps to prolong their lives and help them from getting diseases.

3. Which of the diseases discussed in the lesson do you think would be the most difficult to treat? Why? Bloat because it can kill the animal so quickly that no matter what you do they might end up dying anyways.

4. What effects do you think skeletal disorders have on animals? What can be done to help treat these diseases? They break down the bone and wear it away causing arthritis and making it difficult for the animal to move around.

5. Do you think you’d like to work with animals as a veterinarian, diagnosing and treating their diseases?
