Net neutrality is defined as, “the principle that Internet service providers should enable access to all content and applications regardless of the source, and without favoring or blocking particular products or websites.”[1] In better terms, it is what allows the average person have open access to the Internet, without censorship or restriction of ideas. Net Neutrality is the Internet’s freedom of speech.
Recently, many bills–up to 10[2]–have been proposed in opposition to Net Neutrality. Lobbyists from the organizations change the point of view of government legislators; often this is through a monetary incentive. It is concerning that lawmakers can be bribed to alter their vote based on who pays the most. With enough money and time, ISPs can potentially sway a majority of these legislators if there is no public intervention. Where few businesses are at the top of the totem pole, raising Internet prices through the roof. The government is controlled by what ISPs say, and no one can oppose them without fear of having everything they have done online broadcasted to the world and being shut off of the Internet. Freedom of speech would be absent from this world, with your every word controlled and influenced by an ISP.
What can I do to help fight the big companies and their friends in the government?
The first step to prevent Net Neutrality from fading away is to voice your opinions and become more informed about the issue. Contacting your local congressman or congresswoman is imperative to help them gauge the actual stance of the people, and not the lobbyists of Comcast or Verizon.
Mailing a letter to your state officials, or arranging a meeting can be imperative in persuading their vote in the next anti-Net Neutrality debacle.
America is the land of the free, but without Net Neutrality, our society that has become ever-dependant on the Internet will be limited and controlled by these big name companies. Fight for your right to an open access Internet, and never give up as long as ISPs continue to go against your
