Net neutrality currently allows equal access to the internet for everyone who uses it. However, there is a concern with eliminating net neutrality and how it could encourage internet service providers to censor content on the internet. This is a valid concern, because under network neutrality, service providers are required to treat all internet traffic equally. So, no matter what website, platform, or application a customer uses, the carrier cannot slow or block access to content on that site. Because, net neutrality keeps everything equal for producers and consumers, eliminating it could lead to censorship by the intermediary providers. Without net neutrality ISPs could potentially control what information and websites consumers see and visit. One issue with this is that eliminating net neutrality goes against the “end-to-end” idea that the internet was built on (Lin). This idea is that the decision of what goes on the internet is controlled by the producer and end user. Without net neutrality the intermediary network provider would have control over what gets put on the internet (Lin). ISPs could reject apps that compete with their company, block content and speech that they don’t agree with, and slow access to websites that compete with their services. This would create a “gatekeeper” to the internet and it would no longer be an open source of …show more content…
The internet has always operated on the idea of openness and net neutrality (Reardon), altering it would have a major impact on consumers. Having grown up with the internet at our finger tips we are accustomed to having access to everything on the internet without any limitations. With net neutrality we are able to easily stream any videos and browse any websites without hidden fees or censorship. Net neutrality also allows anyone to post content to the internet. It has created a level playing field where any one can create and post content without needing connections or large sums of money. The fact that this could change during our lifetime and the fact that could impact so many people makes this such an important and relevant
