Nethergrave Analysis
Safari, a company that sends people in the past for hunting trips, and the main character, Eckles, schedules a trip, and travels with two others, to kill a prehistoric dinosaur. Nethergrave by Gloria Skurzynsk's focuses on Jeremy, a boy who plays sports, and chats with his friends from the internet, later, Jeremy is faced with a life-changing choice, to stay in the real world, or leave it for Nethergrave. When comparing and contrasting both A Sound of Thunder and Nethergrave's science fiction elements, characterization, and themes, A Sound of Thunder proves to be superior. The science fiction genre fits into both stories, because of its technology, settings, and events that take place, for example, A Sound of Thunder fits into this genre with …show more content…
A Sound of Thunder's theme, that little things can have a massive impact on yourself and others, is introduced through the Chaos Theory when Eckles steps off the path, and accidentally kills a prehistoric butterfly, which massively impacted the present. When Eckles travels back to the present, the President had lost the election, and instead Deutscher won. Also Time Safari's name and motto changed, and even the feeling of air itself. Nethergrave's theme, that you should trust no one, especially on the internet, is important when considering that anyone on there could be masking themselves, and simply lie to you, making it risky at times. This message is brought up throughout the storyline, for example, Dr.Dead was in fact a stroke victim not the surfer that he claimed to be. The event that expressed the theme the most, was when Jeremy chose to enter the Nethergrave because of loneliness. After Magus told Jeremy about his internet friends secrets, and Nethergrave, he trusted Magus, and he entered without considering his family, or who Magus truly was. Overall, Nethergrave's theme may have been a stronger concept, but it had failed to express it enough throughout the story, compared to A Sound of Thunder's

Science fiction is largely based on writing rationally about alternative possible worlds or futures. It is similar to, but differs from fantasy in that, within the context of the story, its imaginary elements are largely possible within scientifically established or scientifically postulated laws of nature (though some elements in a story might still be pure imaginative speculation).…

A majority amount of stories may have a similar trait to another piece of writing. A large amount of stories have been compared in ways such as theme, settings, characters, irony, and close evidence of foreshadowing. Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury and “There Will Come Soft Rains,” by Ray Bradbury are an example of similar stories by sharing some of the same qualities. These two readings can be said to be identical in some ways by containing a common idea of negative effects of war and the value of the natural world but can be contrasted by being consisted of two different kinds of main characters.…

One of the themes in the “A Sound of Thunder” is that one small bad action can lead up to a massive destruction. I think a theme for “Nethergrave” is that when reality is tough, it is easy to make poor decisions that seem to make it better. Both themes are ideal to remember because they go hand in hand. If you think about it, the theme in “Nethergrave” is saying if life is hard, then it is easier to make poor decision, and if you make poor decision, than it can affect yourself or others like the theme…

“A Sound of Thunder” uses a simple, if overused, theme about how little thing can have a big consequence. Eckel saw what his small mistake when he looks down and saw “Embedded in the mud, glistening gold and green, was a butterfly, very beautiful and very dead.” (Bradbury 299). Because of that butterfly, his whole world is different, hence, little thing, big consequence. Not the most original, but easy to find, “Nethergrave” on the other hand is quite the opposite. “Nethergrave” has a theme of; people will lie to you and it easy to make a wrong decision when you’re down. Now that’s fine, that’s a better theme than “A Sound of Thunder”, but they keep it to hidden. After knowing what it is you can see examples of it like, for the first half of the theme, “Dr.Ded. He isn’t a boy like you. He isn’t a boy at all. He’s a fifty-two-year-old stroke victim. He can’t walk.” (Skurzynski 323) but without knowing what the theme it would have been hard to spot that, especially for the second half of the theme. It’s okay to have a hidden message but this is just ridiculous, you have no direction and no starting/endpoint, it was so hard to find you had to send webmails out to help people. I would like to have given this to “Nethergrave” for a better theme but it was just way too hard to…

The theme for all the stories is, "Technology is wonderful, yet dangerous", but it's all shown differently. In for "A Sounds of Thunder" is that the less is can have a big impact on things, that is seen when Eckels kills the butterfly and when he goes back to his present, the present is altered. The present is alter because the time machine is created and they mess up the future, "It [Time Machine] couldn't change things. Killing one butterfly couldn't be that important"(81)! The theme in "There Will Come Soft Rains" is technology is a wonderful yet dangerous thing. The city was destroyed, leaving the house alone, "...west face of the house was black, save for [a]... man... woman... boy... girl..."(88). The house shows us the beauty and flaw of the technology, the silhouettes of the family shows us the dangerous side of technology. At last the theme of "The Pedestrian" is technology is wonderful and addictive, "The street was silent and long and empty... only his shadow... like the shadow of a hawk... " this shows that the people are so addicted to the TV that the streets were silent, and it's hard to imagine that(98). The stories have had different themes because they aren't about the same thing. They all do talk about impacts, whether it was the butterfly, the nuclear explosion or the television. Bradbury made that clear, and he showed his theme with his style of…

A Sound of Thunder is a short story written by Ray Bradbury which belongs to the genre of science fiction. Set in a near future where time travel is possible, this is the story of a travel agency, Time Safari Inc., that arranges hunting trips back in time to hunt dinosaurs. In this case, a nervous hunter, Eckels, steps off the trail, and steps on a butterfly. The historical repercussions of the death of a single butterfly, compounded by millions of years of effects, leaves the hunters to return to a future that is not quite the one they came from. In this commentary I will analyze the tone structure and literary devices used by the author in this story.…
