Network Administrator
I have decided to pursue the career of a network system administrator or IT professional. Over the last ten years or so computers have become fundamental parts of everyday life, used for a variety of reasons at home, in the workplace, and at schools. Of course every computer user runs into obstacles from time to time, whether it is the blue screen of death, the forgotten password, or the loss of important data. The explosive use of computers has created a high demand for specialists to provide advice to users, as well as for day-to-day administration, maintenance, and support of computer systems and networks. (Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2006-07 Edition, Computer Support Specialists and Systems Administrators, on the Internet at http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos268.htm (visited September 24, 2007). That makes me ask what are career possibilities and overall future Job Outlook of a Network System administrator.
So first and foremost we need to fully understand what is a network? A computer network is composed of multiple connected computers that communicate over a wired or wireless medium to share data and other resources. For instance, a home computer network may consist of two or more computers that share files and a printer using the network. The size and scalability of any computer network are determined both by the physical medium of communication and by the software controlling the communication. (Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (2007) Computer network. Retrieved September 25, 2007 from (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_network) Ok so then what is a Network System Administrator?.It is defined best by the U.S Department of Labor: Network administrators design, install, and support an organization’s local-area network (LAN), wide-area network (WAN), network segment, Internet, or intranet system. They provide day-to-day onsite administrative support for software users in a variety of work environments,

Computer and information systems managers coordinate the work of systems analysts, computer programmers, support specialists, and other computer-related workers. They plan and coordinate activities such as installation and upgrading of hardware and software, programming and systems design, and the development of computer networks. They are becoming more involved with the upkeep, maintenance, and security of networks. They analyze the computer and information needs of their companies and determine the immediate and long-range personnel and equipment requirements. They also assign and review the work of their subordinates and stay up to date with the latest technology to make sure the company does not lag behind competitors. Computer and information systems managers usually spend most of their time in an office environment. They typically work at least 40 hours a week and possibly work evenings and weekends to meet deadlines or solve unexpected problems. As networks continue to grow and more work is done remotely, computer and information systems managers must communicate with and oversee offsite employees using modems, laptops, e-mail, and the Internet.…

The impact of technology in our lives has grown exponentially over recent years. The demand for better, faster, more productive software and hardware equipment has increased the need for more experienced and better qualified IT specialists. These IT professionals must possess a degree of knowledge and expertise that sets them apart from others in their field. One way industry has set the standard in recruiting such specialized individuals is certification. Becoming certified is recognized proof of professional achievement. Once hired, a network administrator will be expected to perform certain networking tasks usually requiring considerable work hours. Tasks generally include maintaining the network hardware and cabling, installing software updates and fixes, and performing backups of important data (Career direction, p. 28). Since network failures are inevitable, a network administrator is always "on-call." When a problem arises, the network administrator is the person who is called first regardless of time or schedule. Since a network administrator must be accessible at all times, owning a cell phone or pager is a job necessity and is usually provided to the network administrator by the company. The network is used during the normal business hours by other employees; therefore, most activities involving data backups and software and file updates are usually performed after normal business hours. Many of these types of activities take longer than expected resulting in long hours of overtime for the network administrator and other computer and information system personnel.…
