Case Project 1-1

Networking Gadgets, Inc. requirements are secured centralized access network for 18 people that is easy to manage and back up. They need server-based network because peer-to-peer network model has no centralized authority or control over resources. On the other hand, server-based network provides centralized control over network resources and will have secure access to project files and will fulfill company’s need for centralized management and back up requirement. So, all of these factors are the key reasons for using server-based network.

Case Project 1-4

For my GPS to upload data to my PDA wirelessly, I would use a short-range networking technology which is WPAN ( wireless personal area network ). The WPAN is a short-range networking technology designed to connect personal devices to exchange information. Bluetooth technology is a very good example of WPAN short-range technology which can exchange information between my GPS and PDA.

Case Project 2-1

To upgrade this network of 50 computers connected with hubs, I would do two improvements to this network. First of all, I would use switches instead of hubs because hubs are the main reason for poor network response time caused by collisions. Hubs have many drawbacks. They share bandwidth which slows the process of transferring large files and accessing network applications, where as switches have dedicated bandwidth. The other improvement would be to use the switches with 100mbps bandwidth instead of 10mbps. This upgraded network will allow the company to expand its network as its future requirements grow.

An enterprise level company wishes to set up a network to support several hundred business users as well as manufacturing equipment in a new building. Describe what network device or devices you would recommend they purchase and explain why. Note, you are not required to detail the media or topology utilized, but thinking about these will help you to choose and justify your device choices. I would suggest the purchase of a rack system with two servers on large server to handle the few hundred computers and users and the other to handle the manufacturing equipment. This would give them choices for backups and file sharing between one another. The servers…

First I would begin by incorporating the star topology with an extended topology. I would do this because I can upgrade the network by replacing the problem components such as the 10mbs Ethernet hubs and the existing cables. I would replace the hub with a gigabit switch and add gigabit wireless router for the five computers to connect to the network. I would replace the 10 computer network interface cards with a 10/100/1000 Mbps NIC and replace the old cable with cat6 Ethernet cables and the five additional computer with wireless cards to negate the wiring problem. Finally, I would add a server for security and allow access for authorize users. I think all these components should help with the lag in the system when transferring large files and solve the bandwidth problems. And the five computers with seamlessly fit into the network without any additional cables.…

Over four months, a very short period of time, a small accounting firm grew from five employees to fifty. The existing network architecture could no longer support the exponential growth. Peer-to-Peer networks work very well in a small office environment. Once the ratio of employees exceeds around five employees resources, file storage and a plethora of other network disasters begin. All networks are made up of basic hardware building blocks to interconnect network nodes, such as Network Interface Cards (NICs), Bridges, Hubs, Switches, and Routers. In addition, some method of connecting these building blocks is required, usually in the form of galvanic cable (most commonly Category 5 cable). Less common are microwave links (as in IEEE 802.12) or optical cable ("optical fiber"). An ethernet card may also be required.…
