“Public speech is the most valuable skill you can learn.” That’s the line that seems to start every awards ceremony spiel, every college essay, every application for speech captainship...oh hey, look. But despite the popularity of this idea, I feel there is a distinction to be made between the value of public speaking, and the value of being on the Neuqua Valley Speech Team. Over two years, I’ve learned that being a part of this team is more than just learning how to act, write, or prep a broadcast – it’s about learning how to connect with people, both in rounds and in real life.
