Neurocardiogenic Syncope Informative Speech
Imagine that you’re in the supermarket on-line at the register. After a long wait, there’s only a single person ahead of you. The cashier calls for the next person, but they don’t move. You try to catch their attention, but in the blink of an eye they collapse on the floor. This act of passing out is called a syncopal episode. This may be a sign of a condition called Neurocardogenic Syncope. Today I will tell you about what causes this condition, its signs and symptoms, and how its diagnosed and treated. Neurocardiogenic Syncope, otherwise known as Vasovagal Syncope or Neurally Mediated Syncope, is an autonomic disorder that falls under the category of Dysautonomia. According to the Mayo Clinic, the blood vessels in the affected individual’s legs dilate, or expand. The blood then pools in the legs and the veins struggle to push it back up to the heart, dropping the blood pressure and heart rate. If nothing is found, a tilt table test is done (Dysautonomia International, 2012). During a tilt table test, a person is strapped to a table and placed in a standing position at a slight angle. I personally passed out after only 14 minutes and my heart stopped for 4 seconds. To treat the condition, medicines like beta-blockers, midodirne, and fludrocortisone may be used for severe cases. A study from the Division of Cardiology in Columbia University stated that most people can manage the condition by increasing their salt and fluid intake and avoiding any known triggers that cause fainting (Bloomfield, 2002).
