The New England colony was made up entirely of Puritans and Separatists. The goal of these two religions was either purify the Church of England religion, or completely separate from it. Their main reason for immigrating to the New World was for religious purposes. Their whole economy was based off of religion. Behavioral enforcement reflected the society, and eventually, the Puritan and Separatist religion influenced the religion in the New England colony. The Chesapeake region on the other hand came over to find gold and wealth. The majority of the Chesapeake region was made up of middle class clergymen and indentured servants. All the men wanted to gain wealth and have a chance to become rich in the new colonies. Because none of the men wanted to work for their food, they went through a Starving Time.

The people of Maryland and Virginia wanted more people to come to this region to plant and sell the tobacco.
In the New England region the Church was the center of everything they did. The church controlled where people lived, where they worked, and whether or not the children went to school.
