Understanding food labels is essential knowledge for eating healthily and for making sure that the proper nutrients are available in the food we consume every day. Nearly every packaged food item purchasable in the United States is labeled with the nutritional value by the Food and Drug administration. A few key elements exist to help us understand the nutrition on these labels.…
The 5/20 rule is a healthy formula that an individual can follow to make sure that they are receiving the proper daily percentage in a serving. The 5/20 rule is making sure that if a serving of a particular nutrient is within an individual’s particular need. An example would be I am watching my saturated fat intake and carbohydrates. I have an 18 ounce jar of Jif Omega-3 peanut butter. There are 15 servings in a jar. A single serving of peanut butter is two tablespoons. The saturated fat for this particular item is 14% of the recommended daily requirement. The total fat for the individual serving was 25% for the total value of the day. That is too much fat to be consuming for…
“All we want is a simple label for the food that's on our table”. This quote was spoken from a marcher who demands gmos to be labeled for our safety. Gmos are man made plants that still possess unknown effects to our health. In a recent article entitled “labels for gmos foods are a bad idea ” directly oppose people questioning gmos and believing gmos are hazardous. The article tries to persuade the reader into giving a second thought on gmos and think maybe their not so dangerous. Ultimately the articles opinion on gmos being in the food market is that gmos are safe for eating and now ones reported about gmos harming their health. I recognize this article as someone's opinion but i disagree with the idea. Also the article attacks directly…
There are some economic issues that come with these new menus in the school. Some parents will worry that their children won’t be eating at all if there isn’t food that they like to eat. While at the same time some of the healthier options cost a little bit more to buy and serve to our students so some people may be concerned about budget issues within local school districts. But in all reality our state school board is just trying to improve the health of our children so they have a better chance at being healthy throughout the rest of their lives, compared to many people suffering daily from different health issues.…
If you were to eat the entire product, how many calories would you have consumed:…
I reexamined the foods i've been consuming and became astounded. Looking at something as classic as bread, a food that used to contain only a few ingredients, now contains dozens. The effects of the industrialization are all around us, especially in our food. I was unaware that products that make health claims aren't exactly healthy and was surprised to find all of the tricks and loopholes the FDA allows. The rules regarding wording are ambiguous, thus making the health claims on foods almost frivolous. This book examined the diet fads of the past in America such as when margarine was considered to be healthier than butter. I’ve learned that we come up with a new diet plan and find “stunning” data that will better our health all the time, but our health has yet to make a drastic improvement. While we continue to consume the Western Diet, we look for ways to outsmart it rather than do the obvious thing and move away from it. Ultimately, I came away from the book with far more knowledge then when I entered. The book offered great incite into the food industry and how it all works. I am glad I read this book and will definitely implement some lessons into my life.…
They say it's a ridiculous idea and that there is no need, but they just don't see the harm being put into their body. In the text, the author makes a clear statement that the labels won't help, and I can see why he says this, but he also states how obesity is not the best today. Still, he says that “bombarding soda drinkers with warning labels won't help.” He claims that the sugary drinks aren't the only source of obesity and this is true, but the other text states the same thing. He writes about what else we would put warning labels on, because everything has sugar in it! Another good thing that this writer draws a conclusion to, would be how beverage companies have already helped slow down the unhealthy decisions. When the author actually concluded his statement, it was clear that he doesn't want to deal with warning labels, but I still have to disagree.…

The most obvious change is that a half cup of fruit or vegetables will be served with every lunch. If school districts don’t comply with the new mandates, they won’t be reimbursed by the federal government for their lunch program. The school lunch changes are a responsible response to what health experts call an epidemic. An estimated 23 million children and teens in the U.S. are obese or overweight, a statistic that health and medical experts consider an epidemic. That prevalence puts nearly a third of the country’s kids at early risk of a litany of diseases usually associated with adults with Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and even stroke.…
I’m going to be talking about if we should eliminate the electoral college. On December 13, 2000, vice president Al Gore conceded the presidential election to Governor Bush. A day earlier, a lengthy and expensive manual vote recount process in Florida was stopped by the United States supreme court despite Bush leading by only 537 votes with Bush winning the states by 25 electoral votes put him over the needed threshold of 275. This election result was highly unusual not just because of Supreme Court decisions it was also the 4th time in united states history that a candidate had garnered majority of the popular votes but lost the election. As you all also have heard this type of scenario happened again with Hillary winning the popular vote…
Food labeling has come a long way. It's surprising but it wasn't until 1990 that the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act required all packaged foods to include nutritional information. Required categories of nutritional labeling regulations include the ingredients list, serving size, nutrition facts, and daily value standards of nutrients. Additionally, if the product wishes to make claims about nutrients and healthfulness, they must substantiate them in some way. Nutritional information for non-packaged food like produce or fresh meats is often found on a nearby sign or in a brochure. (http://www.fda.gov/aboutfda/whatwedo/history/milestones/ucm128305.htm, http://www.fda.gov/ICECI/Inspections/InspectionGuides/ucm074948.htm, & p.53)…
Through hearings and expert testimony of doctors and scientists of the day, they developed a single, population wide guide that applied to all individuals regardless of their risk or needs. They labeled it the “Dietary Guidelines for Americans” and in 1990 advised that it be reviewed and updated every 5 years by the United States Department of Agriculture and the Department of Health and Human Services (Rowe et al., 2011). This overarching guidance suggested that all citizens should eat a diet that reduced fat and cholesterol from animal products such as meat, whole milk, eggs, and butter and instead consume more grains, cereals, vegetable oils, fruits and vegetables. However, when Americans began to replace fat with starches and sugars were used to compensate for the lack of flavor in foods, not only did the rate of diseases such as diabetes increase but so did the rate of obesity. Food business used the guidelines to promote these starchy, sugary products as “healthy” according to the government. The guidelines have since been reworked with extensive science to become a complicated extension document no longer intended for consumers but for guidance for food manufactures and professionals only to be used for translating health initiatives to the…
Zinczenko agrees with this statement, when he writes attaining to labels on fast food being misleading “ For example, one company’s Web lists its chicken salad as containing 150 calories; the almonds and noodles that come with it (an additional 190 calories are listed separately. Add a serving of the 280-calorie dressing, and you’ve got a healthy lunch alternative that comes in at 620 calories. But that’s not all. Read the small print on the back of the dressing packet and you’ll realize it actually contains 2.5 servings. If you pour what you’ve been served, you’re suddenly up around 1040 calories, which is half of the government’s recommended daily calorie intake”. Basically, Zinczenko is saying that fast food companies are not telling the whole story. Advertising is another big influence on America’s obesity epidemic McDonalds and Burger king alone spent 1 billion dollars in advertising just to get there product seen. From my own experience in fast food commercials they show a perfectly constructed sandwich and fries. When you actually receive the product fries are thrown in the bag and a patty is just slapped on the buns. This false image of a perfect sandwich is never seen in person but always on billboards and T.V. That is not all, when targeting young adolescence fast food companies use cartoon characters, toys and other items that have a powerful influence…
Some may say that it’s not going to have any affect and people will still buy junk food because they like to eat it. Those people should be replied with the fact that everything needs a chance to prove. Instead of having negative comments about it before it has even happened, they should think of what it could do if it really worked. Many lives would be saved and obviously money would be saved.…
