New Jersey Environmental Problems
The environmental problem I chose in my local area of Pennsville, New Jersey is the pollution of our water sources. The impact of the industrial discharge, pesticides, atmospheric deposition, and urban street run off is causing depleted oxygen levels, our fish to test positive for Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs), aquatic life impairment of Phosphorous and Total Suspended Solids (TSS), Nitrogen contamination, and primary contact recreation to be contaminated by Enterococcus Bacteria and Fecal Coliform (EPA, 2017). The area is also being forced to take extensive measures to treat the drinking water to ensure it is safe for consumption.

Dog waste falls under the agriculture pollution because it breaks down into the ground and gets in to the ground water and into storm drains and contributes to fecal contamination. (Manuel, 2014) Collecting leaves for a compost pile or mulching them with a lawn mower also helps because leaving leaves in the yard to mat together causes big problems. It clogs up storm drains when left at the road and when they do break down in abundance it overwhelms water supplies with nutrients which throws off the balance. Making sure my car does not leak oil keeps it from seeping into the ground or into drains and washing the car in the grass keeps the soap and dirt from going into the storm drain. (Preventing Storm Water Pollution, 2011). A way to promote environmental responsibility in my community is to rally together a clean-up group and walk the streets picking up litter and raking leaves off of the curbside. I could also hand out fliers informing my neighbors about what is going on I our environment and spreading awareness. That would allow people to adjust their habits as
