University of California-Berkley geographer and author Michael Johns argues in his novel, The City of Mexico in the Age of Diaz, that the central Zocalo of Mexico City does more than geographically segregate the East from the West, but Mexico's national mentality as well. During the years of Diaz's democratic façade, the upper classes thrived upon plantation exports, feudalist economics and the iron fist of Diaz's rurales while struggling to maintain European social likeness. In 1821, he had been granted a significant amount of land in the territory, but died shortly after. That was when Stephen F. Austin became the one to move forward with the settlement. It originally attracted 297 US families and continued to grow. By 1830, the Mexican government was greatly concerned with the large population of US citizens moving to Texas, so they closed the border. When this happened, Austin took action to convince Mexico’s President to reopen the border, because many Texan settlers still had families in America who wanted to settle there. The President of Mexico listened to him and did as he asked.…

The past holds never-changing events, although those who have lived through those events may have diverging recollections and interpretations regarding the events that had taken place. Perception, along with other factors, are the cause of this. An example of perception possibly altering a recollection of actual historical events is Bernal Diaz de Castillo’s recollection of the conquest of Tenochtitlan (Mexico City). Diaz at the time, was a Spanish soldier during the conquest of Mexico City, which took place from 1519 to 1521. At the age of eighty-four years old in 1568, over forty years after the events had taken place, Diaz produced a narrative from his time as a soldier during the conquest of Mexico City. Diaz self proclaims in his recollection…

It took New Mexico more than half a century to shed its territorial status and become a state. New Mexico's citizens first attempted to gain statehood in 1850, when local officials drafted a state constitution which was overwhelmingly approved by voters. A legislature and executive officials were elected. That same summer, however, this statehood plan was nullified when Congress passed the Compromise Bill of 1850 which granted New Mexico territorial status. Other attempts to develop and implement a state constitution followed, including proposed constitutions which were defeated at the polls in 1872 and 1889. There was even an effort at joint statehood with Arizona in 1906, but this too was defeated by the voters, mainly those from Arizona. They feared that Santa Fe would control the state’s politics.…
