New Orleans Killer Come Back
Published March 13, 1919. By Angela Kong

New Orleans: Has the killer come back?

Over a rough period of 10 months, a man who identified himself as the “Axeman” appeared. He is believed to be responsible for 11 attacks and 5 deaths. News spread throughout New Orleans, placing fear in its citizens. The killer attacked people in their sleep, using weapons only from the victims households, primarily an ax.

The first attack happened on May 2, 1918. Victims Catherine and Joseph Maggi had been attacked by an ax, and also had their throats slit. Joseph’s brothers discovered the two, and claim nothing was heard or seen. No valuables were taken, only discovered a bloody ax by the door.

Second attack occurred roughly a month later, on the 28. Louis Besumer and Anna Lowe were discovered by an anonymous baker. Lowe described a white man with a hatchet, and sadly passed 7 weeks later, while Besumer survived.

She survived, and gave birth a week later. Joseph Romano was attacked only 5 days later, and described a dark, tall heavy set man wearing a dark suit as his attacker.

N.O newspaper sent out a warning to the feared killer, and seemed to work as he went off the grid for awhile.. Until a fifth attack occurred on March 10, 1919, 7 months later. The Cortimiglia family was cruelly attacked. The couple made it out alive, but sadly their daughter did not.

A few days later, N.O newspaper received a letter from who is suspected to be the “Axeman”. It did not only insult and threaten the police, but also stated he could be much worse. New Orleans police are now tightening up security, putting more officers to

Over a year period, there were twelve crimes committed and possibly one mysterious suspect. What brought the city to their attention was the first crime made on May 23, 1918 when an Italian grocer, Joseph Maggio and his wife were butchered in their apartment during the night above the Maggio grocery store (Taylor). In the crime scene was the weapon, an axe, which seemed to have had been covered in blood. As police dug into the case, several suspects were questioned, but investigators seemed to be lacking evidence and the only clear clue seemed to be a message written in chalk near the home reading; “Mrs. Joseph Maggio will sit up tonight. Just write Mrs. Toney” (Taylor). Looking back into files, what seemed to appear was a case similar to the Maggio’s. Standing out was the use of an axe to chisel out an access way into the victim’s homes. More importantly in 1911 there were three other murders targeted towards Italian grocers (“Axeman”). There had to have been some kind of pattern forming.…

Danny Glover once stated, “When Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf and the floodwaters rose and tore through New Orleans, it did not turn the region into a Third World country…it revealed one” (Glover). As the winds reached speeds of 100 to 140 miles per hour, water crashed against the levees, breaking them, and flooding 80% of Louisiana. Hurricane Katrina’s peaked at a category five, but disintegrated into a category three. The third deadliest hurricane is what Hurricane Katrina achieved. In the wake of a dark time, Hurricane Katrina proved to America how crucial preparedness is and three reasons Hurricane Katrina proved unpreparedness include; The New Orleans poorly built levee system, the prolonged displacement of hundreds of thousands…
