News Report: Students Clean up Waterfront
Last week, high school students won a contest. The reason the students were in a the contest, was because they were participating in a Earth Day event.

Students from Erindale Secondary were participating in a clean up Nature Contest. The school that collected the most garbage would receive $ 3000. The students who were eager to win, went to Erindale park to clean up garbage along the credit river.

It was early last week that this contest took place. Over 40 other schools were involved in the event. How the event worked was each school was to pick a local location and clean up as much garbage as possible. The students collected the garbage in plastic bags. At the end of the day all garbage collected was brought to te school and collected by the Nature comity.

The later on that week the comity told Erindale that they had collected the most garbage. "Im glad the students spent their time doing something good for the community." Principle Wayne was overheard saying.

The school was awarded their prize in the school cafeteria by the Nature Comity. "It's good now that the school has extra money to spend." Mr.Sam one of the teachers was herd saying.

The comity hope that by introducing this contest more school will participate in simular events.

“The two trash collectors hop down form their vehicles and stand there, dumbstruck, contemplating the mountain of bags piled up on the asphalt. The first one, looking dismayed, pretends to count them. I start to worry; have I infringed some city bylaw that limits the number of bags per house? The second garbageman, much more pragmatic, sets about filling the truck. He obviously couldn’t care less about the number of bags, their contents, or the story behind them” (4).…

Trash, garbage, junk, debris-all alternatively known as litter-scattered across the 268,597 square miles of Texas on our highways and landscapes. Where former First Lady Claudia Alta "Lady Bird" Johnson aspired to see bright and colorful wildflower blanketing the great Texas countryside, oftentimes we only see disturbing amounts of garbage. This is what I aim to change. Through my school's Key Club I have had the opportunity to have a positive impacts in reducing the "over 435 million pieces of visible litter" covering "our empire wide and glorious." In the thirty-eight total service hours I have dedicated to both Texas Adopt-A-Highway and school wide recycling the amount of litter that myself and the generous volunteers…

In the column “The Ethicist” by Randy Cohen, he received a question from a reader. It demonstrated how parents are concerned about teachers exchanging donations, from students, for a grade. They believe that this action defeats the purpose and value of charities and donations. Students can easily set expectations for receiving a reward after achieving a considerate act. However this exchanging process is able to inspire students to take generous actions in their future. The exchange can give a student an opportunity to gain many benefits if they decide to participate. This is encouraging students to gain knowledge on life and on the academic experience. This trade allows students to become aware and acknowledge that there are organizations and charities to help out others.…

In my Senior Year of being in the National Honor Society, I was excited to volunteer and to help those in need. I helped out with a soup kitchen in Brainerd through another organization that I am in, the Student Council. As I scooped soup into bowls and placed them onto people’s trays, I could see a look of appreciation and gratitude on their faces. This was the first time in my National Honor Society career where I understood just how much my time and effort meant to these individuals. This volunteer opportunity made me realize that a simple meal, smile, and effort to do something helpful and nice can really make someone’s day brighter or easier.…

Today, policy makers and waste management companies have been trying to find new ways to reduce the amount of waste entering the landfills because we are rapidly running out of space for such use. In 2000, U.S. residents and businesses produced more than 221 million tons of waste, which is approximately 4.5 pounds of waste per person per day. However, the amount of waste sent to landfills in 2000 was down 13% from the 1990 total, and the amount of waste recovered in recycling has nearly doubled during the same period (ASCE, 2005). Instead of building more landfills, there is a need to focus on methods such as recycling to keep waste out of landfills. Recycling can be more effective and less costly in every way. Landfills are sources of natural hazards which have risks both to the environment and human health.…

This project helps me to understand what the real world is all about and what is going on with it. I first thought that I lived in a luxurious place with all of God’s creations, but we are not aware of how we destroy our own treasures. Just like the problem in Brgy. Diego Silang, Butuan City which is improper waste disposal. It made me think, why do people not segregate their garbage even though there are policies regarding that problem?…
