One of the misconceptions in physics is about Newtons laws. It says that friction can't act in the direction of motion. This is wrong because friction can act in the same direction as motion simply because a car on a road is traveling in one direction. It seems like it shouldn't be this way because it free falls at a constant rate, but it makes an elliptical pattern. Skin can tell hot from cold, but it is a very inaccurate thermometer because there are many factors outside that can make you think it is hotter than it actually is. When the weather man tells you the temperature outsides is 84, but it feels like 94, that is when the variables come in to make it seem hotter than it is. It is seldom that they do stumble on them, but the purpose to all scientific experiments is to have a problem, and try to come up for an explanation for it. I don't recall any big discoveries being made that were accident, so to say that they always stumble on discoveries is a huge misconception.
