My desire to pursue a career in health care is greatly influenced by its unlimited opportunities for career development and the desire to impact another person’s life positively. As a kid, I always had a burning desire to become a nurse or a medical doctor but my parents’ influence and their perception of the engineering profession while in Nigeria lured me away. I trained and practiced as a Materials Engineer back in Nigeria, where I worked as a research and development officer for five years. However, coming to the United States created the turning point in my life. I searched for engineering jobs unsuccessfully for many months, and none was forthcoming despite availability of many job openings in nursing and healthcare related fields. In order to confirm my readiness to pursue nursing as a career, I entered a Practical Nursing program at the Wilbur Wright College in Chicago. At this time, I was still driving cab to support myself, while I dropped it completely upon graduation and passing LPN board examination.…

I also found the environment of the school quite peculiar to what I was immune to. A month later I was one of many students being prepared for college. All three years, as being a Risley student, the program was given a report on its outstanding performances.…

“To me the distinguishing characteristic of professional nursing is clinical thinking, every patient, whether well, getting sick, being sick or getting well has the right to a nurse who by virtue of this clinical thinking, manages the nursing care and is accountable for that care.” It would be a blessing to be a student of a prestigious program that was founded by the honorable late Ms. Dorothy M. Smith. Her aspiration and dedication to the program to feed and educate hungry minds is phenomenal. Being a former biology major, I was never enthusiastic as I am being a nursing major. Nurses are the glue that holds hospitals, clinics and nursing homes together. Desiring a Bachelor of Sciences in nursing, I plan to hold a position as a RN. Furthermore, I will continue my education to gain a doctorate in nursing. Attending University of Florida’s nursing program to achieve my career goals is a dream of an aspiring nurse. With the University of Florida’s academic standing, student involvement, comfortable environment and cheerful staff, being a part of the program is a beneficial plus. Entering college, my goal was to graduate with a Bachelor in biology and then attend medical school, to pursue a career as a pediatrician. However, a few complications arouse and that goal was short-lived. I am always told; never give up, on yourself and your dreams. Itching for the need to stay in the medical field, I decided on nursing. Deciding to get both my bachelors and masters rather than only my bachelor was the best decision I made. I decided on becoming a Neonatal Nurse Practioner. My career goal will not be achieved easily. It is a guaranteed package of gray hair, sweat, stress, gallons of Starbucks and dreams of my bed. I can be certain that I will be pushed to my limit to become the best nurse I am capable of being so that I am able to care for my patients the best way that I can. Previously having attended University of Florida, there was not a day I regretted saying yes to…

I am extremely proud of being Hispanic. The traditions and values that the Hispanic community embodies will always be a part of who I am. The gratitude I feel for being Hispanic is indescribable. Being Hispanic and undocumented has taught me things that are essential to my identity. Having a father who works all day in order to provide for his family has shaped the way I view the world. Having a mother who stays up all night when I am sick has facilitated in me a passion for my family. Family and my own success are what drive me to excel in school. Love is another aspect of me that being Hispanic has taught me. As Dr. Martin Luther King once said, “I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear.” That line from Dr. King stirs in me a love for humanity that I cannot describe. A passion for school, family, and love is what being Hispanic has taught me.…

I wish to be considered for entry into this psychiatric nursing program with the goal of potentially becoming a registered psychiatric nurse because due to my prior personal experience I have learned that nursing would be best suitable for me. This is because as I volunteered at Hilton Villa care home place I learned many things about patients. Firstly, I noticed that patients with mental illness or mental distress need nurses that could genuinely cooperate with them. While I was volunteering I was helping patients with being able to consume their meals, and keeping them entertained .For example, reading them books and playing games and doing activities with them. This made the patients occupied and happy causing them to have better health. To me, this was the most rewarding feeling ever. Due to this volunteering experience I developed a passion for wanting to pursue a career in psychiatric nursing. In addition, My personal motivation to potentially become a psychiatric nurse developed from my volunteer experience, as I witnessed the nurses helping the patients in such a positive manner with strong relationship bonds it really persuaded me to want to become a nurse in the future as well. Being able to commit my time for helping patients with mental illness or distress would be a pleasure. Furthermore, contacting with people that suffer mental illness or mental distress could be challenging however as a psychiatric nurse being able to cooperate with this challenging behavior could be difficult at times but I am always willing to accept challenges and would be seeking to engage with the patient to draw on his or her inner resources in addition to any other treatment they may be receiving. Also, as a psychiatric nurse it would be a thrill to develop therapeutic relationships and alliances with patients. Lastly, my understanding of the role of registered psychiatric nurses is that they are considered health care professionals and have a…
