The sculpture is located at the FIU Frost Art Museum. The medium used by the artist to create this sculpture was a ceramic tile. The mass of the sculpture is small. The artist created a sculpture in high relief which he then painted and covered in gloss making the visual texture of the sculpture smooth. Some of the formal elements used by the artist were intense hues of blue as the background for the sky . The Airman himself which is the focal point of the sculpture is painted in light shades of beige and intense whites as well as the four airplanes flying above him. The sculpture is not symmetrical the Airman covers most of the sculpture giving the illusion that the airplanes are flying high above him in the sky. This was done using the linear…

Pilgrim Assurance is a case that involves a sealed bid auction. Therefore, the auctioneers will need to sell the building to the highest bidder involved at a minimum bid of $15 million. David Bailey is given the decision to decide on how much to bid for an office building. Furthermore, he needs to make the decision whether to lease it as office space or to convert this office space into condominiums. In this case, I will analyze the goals and objectives of Bailey as well as the other participants. The sealed bid auction indicates that they are willing to take a chance on the market and try to receive high bids. There is no problem with the government participant besides using permits to do renovations. There is no financing constraints, so the lending is not an issue. In my analysis I did a five year discounting cash flow, NPV and IRR of upgrading the office building as well as condo converting.…
During this summer, I attended an Architecture Summer Program at the University of Pennsylvania, designed a children’s water park in the campus and hand-made a model of it. However, the visit of City Hall and Dilworth Park inspired me much. City Hall, as the heart of downtown Philadelphia and the nation’s largest municipal building, serves the city’s government and politics for over 100 years. It boasts over 250 architectural relief’s and freestanding sculptures including the statue of William Penn, which stands atop the City Hall Tower . The classic Second French Empire style of City Hall buildings and the modern sense of the Dilworth Park in front of City Hall perfectly integrate and mutually impact each other. The dynamic energy of the fountain in Dilworth Park does not affect the majesty of City Hall, rather add vitality to it .…
The title of Ada Louise Huxtable’s book is not the only thing that alludes to Louis Sullivan’s article in 1896, “The Tall Office Building Artistically Considered.” Sullivan’s article is concerned with how “form follows function”. However, the overarching question within Sullivan’s article asks: What type of decoration or façade should these steel skeleton multi-storied office towers be wrapped in? Huxtable believes that this very question is one that needs repeating. Huxtable not only gives us a look back, but also offers her expectations for the future in the answering of this very question.…
One chilly night on March 5th, 1770 war broke out between the Patriots and the Loyalists. It occurred on King Street in Boston, Massachusetts. Before this event took place, the British had decided to tax the colonists for many manufactured items acquired through trade. This caused an outrage in the populace of Boston, mostly for the impoverished people. Ever since then, the colonists have been boycotting and protesting against these inequitable laws. Then on this day the Patriots and Loyalists were bickering when a shot was fired into the crowd of the Loyalists and then someone had yelled “Fire!” and in the end, few Patriots were killed and some injured. This anger the Colonists greatly and they deserved justice, this night will always be remembered…
the famous Parisian gallery "La Maison Moderne", however this is not fully known. “Secession” was its name in Austria-Hungary and its state successors, aptly named after the “Viennese Secession”; a group of Austrian artists, sculptors and architects, who had broken away from the ‘Association of Austrian Artists’. It was known in Italy as “Stile Liberty”; the name taken from the London department store ‘Liberty & Co.’, in which the style was largely popularised. Art Nouveau is beautifully inspired by structure and form through the natural world; not only in flora such as plants and flowers, but also by curvature in line work (examples fig. 1, 2 top, left). Architects attempted to incorporate these styles and principles into their work, trying to harmonise with the natural environment. Art Nouveau is also considered a philosophy in the design of furniture, which means that furniture itself, should be designed based upon the whole building and made part of ordinary life - form and Fig. 2…

Both “The Case for Reparations” and The Marrow of Tradition, examine the issue of reparations in return for the egregious injustices committed in the form of slavery by our predecessors. The cornerstone of this problem is that after years of generational oppression and discrimination, what form will this reparation end up taking? A reparation that is based on doling out mere financial support for those that endured the brutality of slavery is unreasonable. It is an insult to the blacks that were subjugated in the slave economy of the past under the guise of racial superiority. Simply treating this issue in a one-dimensional viewpoint that can be solved through a monetary basis will not suffice and is stripping from it the aspect of humanity.…

I performed my security lighting survey on the Westport Building of John Jay College, located at 500 W 56th St, New York, NY 10019. During my observation, I discovered that all the perimeters of the building are lighted. According to a maintenance employee at Westport, the lights are checked several times daily prior to darkness and maintenance workers must sign off that they have completed that task for the day. Extra lighting is available at every entrance and exit. Extra lighting is also available in every staircase which ensures that criminal activity can be deterred within the staircase. According to a maintenance employee at Westport once a lighting issue is reported, the maintenance worker on duty make sure lights are repaired promptly…
One building in my town has always caught my eye while I was walking to school for the past years. I was impressed by the Renaissance view of the building and over-the-top details. Most importantly, I felt in love with the traditional overview of the construction and its unique style. Needless to say, now this building is facing demolition and complete destruction.…
What was once just a rail yard, rose up to become a great addition to the City of New York. Real estate developers bought air rights and built apartment towers that became some of the most exclusive residents in not only New York City, but the United States. Next door to the terminal the “Valley of Giants” was created, large skyscrapers began to form the skyline of the city. Walter Chrysler bought a site near Grand Central for the Chrysler’s Company international headquarters. At the time, he built the world’s tallest building. The building held the title for 11 months before the Empire State Building was completed. The area was also home to not only Irwin Chanin’s building, a real estate king, but also to the Daily News Buildings. More businesses flocked to be near to the Grand Central Terminal, including law firms and advertising agencies. It became the center of America’s service industry. This was just one part of the large city with many more to explore through research.…
The Seneca Falls Declaration was written in 1848 at a convention in Seneca Falls New York. Two Quaker women, Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, organized the convention. The idea for the convention came about when Mott was denied a seat at an international antislavery meeting in London. The convention was comprised of 240 people, 40 of whom were men. The Seneca Falls Declaration was modeled after the Declaration of Independence.…
Vanna’s house was to be Venturi’s first building. However, the design took so long that another building was constructed first, the North Penn Visiting Nurses’ Association Headquarters in Pennsylvania (completed in 1961). While the North Penn distorted the pure order of the box of modern architecture on the outside, Vanna’s house distorted it on the inside. It is evident that both buildings shared common ideas.5 Complex entries with symbolic, non-structural, arched openings, and conventional and big-scale elements expressed a new and complex architecture.…
