I ran down the remaining stairs and unlocked and open the door, waiting to embrace my mother in a tight hug.
"Mother I was so scared yo-" I got cut off by a man wearing a police uniform.
"I'm sorry to inform you ma'am, but your mother is dead, there was a shooting that happened and we found a body which appears to be your mothers" After speaking, I looked down to the floor, holding the tears, trying to be strong for my mothers sake.

Language has played a big role in making my life successful. As senior year was ending I had a major life changing decision. I was unsure whether to pursue my passion of baseball in California, or to hang up my cleats for the last time on a high note. Although this was not a life or death decision, It was still a decision that was still near and dear to my heart. After going to several people for help and many sleepless nights, I still felt helpless. I finally came to the conclusion after hearing "The Babe" in the movie Sandlot tell Benny Rodriguez, "Everybody gets one chance to do something great. Most people never take the chance, either because they're too scared, or they don't recognize it when it spits on their shoes." that’s when I decide…

During the summer program I met many different people from various places. One person that I met who I became good friends with was Isabella. Isabella is a high school student going into her junior year. She’s from Boston, Massachusetts and lives with her mom, dad, and older brother. Her dad moved to the United States when he was younger from Argentina, and her mom was born in Italy and also moved to Boston when she was younger. The class she took in the summer program was creative writing: journalism and nonfiction. Isabella and I both have parents that weren’t born in the United States. My parents were both born in Albania, making me first generation just like Isabella is. During the spring season, Isabella and I both play softball. We agree…

When I saw my mom get up slowly then quickly walk to the small room I wondered what was going on, but nothing bad came to mind. While my dad happily named the first pup Baltimore Raven Zapata, after the football team, I went to my room and layed on my bed as my body sunk into the comfort of my pillows and blankets. As I dozed off, I could hear the cheering of fans on the T.V. and that little shut eye felt like I slept a whole three hours.…

The trip home seemed like the longest ever. We walked into the house to find my dad with the TV on. More smoke, more fog, more running to save lives. I remember sitting in front of the TV set, watching aghast and scared. The footage went on forever. Finally my parents calmed me down and convinced me a good nights’ rest would do me some good. I lay in bed racking my brain to figure out why someone would do something so horrible. The next day, we didn’t have to go to school, so I stayed home with my mom. I kept asking her over and over again why this happened, but whatever explanation she gave me, I still couldn’t completely put it all…

We were so happy, I started explaining to her where we were, how the place looked like and that there was a big garbage can, as I explain tears dripped from my eyes. We hugged each other, cried, and stayed put right next to the garbage can. We finally saw my mother’s silver BMW car. We slowly walked towards the car, making sure that it was my mother or one of our parents are in there. I then saw my mother did something with her hand, I know what that meant to hurry up, I told my little cousins to hurry up and get in the car, we ran as fast as we could towards the car and got in. Since then my little cousins and I learned a very big and important lesson that we will never forget, it to your pacings with your family, close and to tell them that you need a break if you are losing your…

It was a beautiful spring morning in Los Angeles. I awoke from an ambulance passing by and I realized I was late for work. When I was on my way to work, I saw more and more ambulances come hurdling passed me, wondering what is going on. When I got to my job as a female security guard for The Los Angeles County Prison there was no one new brought in. As I was waiting for new people to join our jail I was looking at the news with my feet propped on the desk, eating a salad and there is some type of terror in the area. I said to myself “What the FUCK is going on in this world!”…

“I DON’T CARE MOM!” I screamed at the top of my lunges. We were driving along I-95 on the sway home from my successful driver's license test. I was 16. I was normal. The radio played in the background but it couldn’t be heard over my mom yelling. This was the same crap I dealt with every day. I could have sworn that woman tried to find something to fight over: this time it was about how I should, “be more responsible” and “find a job” and “needing to grow up!”…
