The three different concepts or ideas I agreed with and like the most were -“I’m tired of hearing all this talk from people who don’t understand the process of hard work—like little kids in the back seat asking ‘Are we there yet?’ Get where you’re going 1 mile-marker at a time.”,Five Day-to-Day Goals 1)Respect and trust your teammates 2) Have a positive impact on someone else 3) Dominate your opponent 4) Be responsible 5) Act like a champion, and last but not least Locker room sign: “Don’t Come Back Until You’ve Improved”. The reason I liked the first quote was that you could not be the best in one day you have to work on your craft every day and the only way you will improve is by doing so. My reasoning for choosing the second quote is because those five goals would make you a better person on and off the court or field. Lastly, I chose the last quote because there is no reason for leaving the locker room every day and possibly being the same player you were before every time you leave the locker room you should want to get better and push yourself to do so. I would use these quotes in my coaching philosophy because these three would make everyone a better person and player and that’s what a coach is supposed to do.

You earn recognition, all your playing time, and a starting position through hard work. I grew up playing all kinds of different sports. I played baseball, football and later in life I started to swim competitively. In each case, I had to learn to take the responsibility to do my part—for myself and for my teammates. Practice was mandatory and took priority over other interests of mine. This was hard for me, since I missed out on school dances, family activities and other fun events because I had to be at practice everyday. It also forced me to learn good time management skills as I started to balance school, a social life, daily two-hour practices and games on the weekends. The coaches can only teach so much and, while they tried, couldn’t force me to learn my plays or study in my off time. I knew my hard work was paying off when my coach would say, “Good job Gunnar, I’m proud of you!” That one sentence made me realize that my hard work had paid off and that I should continue to work even harder, not only in sports but also in everything I…

Understanding a coaching philosophy is important in the development of one’s own personal philosophy. There are many components that shape a philosophy and understanding who you are as a person and a coach are valuable in the discovery of a coaching philosophy. If we examine the philosophy of Pete Carroll, the Head Coach of the Seattle Seahawks, Pete’s philosophy journey developed as he travelled from college teams to professional football leagues. Not until Coach Carroll hit rock bottom and without a coaching job, did he discover and develop his coaching philosophy. Carroll wrote in his book Win Forever, that if he ever coached again, (he) promised (himself), (he) was going to build an organization that could win forever (Carroll, & Roth,…

    St. Anthony Analysis

“‘We're all going to keep working and getting better, because we have the formula right here”’ (Wojnarowski 180). This quote shows Bob Hurley’s simplistic formula for winning; work hard, win games. This connects to the Xaverian value of simplicity because as described by St. John's Prep, “Simplicity call us to be fully present in all we do… and embrace the infinite potential of every person...” St. Anthony players have to be “fully present” as they work hard in Bob Hurley’s practices and “embrace their full potential” as basketball players as well as people. By being fully present in basketball practice it causes the St. Anthony team to be “fully present in all they all they do” which is one of core ideas of the Xaverian value of simplicity.…

Concealed behind each of these profiles is teamwork. There is no way to make it to the top in any sport without it. If a professional player is only performing within the confines of their responsibilities and nothing else, then they are not playing to their max capability, in my opinion. Just because someone is good in sports doesn’t mean that they have it all together in their interpersonal relationships either. And, relationship changes everything. John Wooden said “those who work alone will never become all they could become if they were working in cooperation with others”. Wooden said loyalty was the force that forges individuals into a team and that it was what gets us through hard times. Regarding team spirit, the coach emphasized that eagerness communicates an attitude of “I’ll be happy to sacrifice personal accomplishments for the good of the team”. “We don’t have to be superstars to reach competitive greatness. All we have to do is learn to rise to every occasion, give our best effort and make those around us better as we do…

Vince Lombardi is regarded as one of the most legendary and greatest coaches of all time. Not only did he create winning teams, his philosophy and motivational skills were key factors to his success as a high school, college, and professional football coach. Vince was Italian and grew up in Brooklyn. His father owned a meat shop, and he made sure that Vince was a responsible young man and had him do work for him when he was not in school. Much of Vince’s philosophy and discipline as a coach was learned from his father in his younger years. His father told him as a young man that “There was only one right and wrong, and he believed that you only did the right thing all the time” (O’Brien, 1987, p. 23). Vince began playing football at the age of 15 and later got a scholarship to play at Fordham University. Although he did not have much playing time at the beginning of his career because there were players who had priority over him and the fact that he incurred several injuries in college football. He was among the linemen that became known as the Seven Blocks of Granite in his later college years. Vince believed in winning, and did not ever take losing lightly. While he was in college, he did well, but not above average in academics. He was a devout Catholic, and he did spend many hours studying to improve his academic scores. After Fordham, Vince played on several semi-professional football teams, but his small stature did not prove him to be a successful football player in the pros. Afterward, he accepted a job as an assistant football coach at St. Cecilia High School in Englewood, New Jersey. This was the start of a long coaching career that would prove Vince Lombardi to be one of the greatest coaches in history.…

As a player for the Hanford West basketball team, I was placed into situations that required me to step up and be the leader of the team. One of these situations was during a game when our most talented player had been injured. I know my teammates relied on me to be the one to look up to for all the answers. I was certain I would have to go beyond my capabilities to lead this unit to victory. The game started off horribly because of the evident lack of effort from our team. As the commander of this group of young men I knew something had to change. I stepped out of my comfort zone and became very vocal in order to get some motivation pumping through our veins. Every time my teammates made a play I would be sure to acknowledge them in some way, whether it was a high five or a nod. This made me realize feedback is essential when taking on the leadership role in order to boost self the confidence of others. As the game went on we managed to pull off an outstanding team victory.…

How about Bill Russell, a 5 time MVP and former center for the Boston Celtics? He quoted, ¨Concentration and mental toughness are the margins of victory.¨ I think he means that whenever you focus, you can win it all. Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James talks about how you go the extra mile by saying, ¨Success favors the flexible. You must be able to stretch that extra mile and be malleable in your ways, know this and you will make it.¨ In this quote, James talks about both being ¨...malleable in your ways...¨ and being ¨...able to stretch that extra mile...¨ so, both are important to…

“Do your job.” A simple quote by Bill Belichick (New England Patriots Head Football Coach) but this quote means a lot about my character. The reason it means a lot to me is because if you work tremendously hard and do your job your team will be successful. My head football coach, Mike Rowe uses this quote as well and adds “If everybody does your job you will be successful. Trust your teammates since they will fight for you and the rest of the team.” I am tying this quote to football but it can be used in any team sport you are involved in. Football teaches character and that’s why I love it so much. I’ve learned so much about myself and how I want to live my life just from being in football.…

As stated in my career timeline, my goal is to become an athletic director for a high school. I believe this job will provide myself with personal fulfillment that I would not achieve anywhere else. For this interview I reached out to a family friend that personally knows the interim athletic director at Gordon State College, Gary Sharpe. Before holding his current position, Mr. Sharpe spent ten years as an assistant baseball coach for Gordon State College. Prior to his collegiate career he served as the head baseball coach for Upson-Lee and coordinator for the Georgia Dugout All-Star Games. Needless to say that Mr. Sharpe has crucial sport management experience from working at the collegiate and high school levels.…

    Tale of Two Coaches

Coaching and leadership seem to be synonymous with each other, in that if you’re a high caliber coach you must be a great leader, how else would you have achieved your success. While coaching in the NCAA division 1 basketball the goal is to win national championships, while also being a mentor to your students. Bobby Knight is a great basketball legend at Indiana, with a past of outrageous unacceptable behavior to the fans and to players, while also having one of the best collegiate records of all time. Coach Krzyzewski was also a great coach, was mentored by coach Knight and went on to be a legend at Duke. Coach K’s style of coaching was less dramatic and more heartfelt in his approach. Coach K’s was concerned for his player’s feelings and his style of motivating his players centered on less dramatizations on and off the court. Both Coaches were successful; one got into the heads of its players through coercive intimidation to be the best, the other through caring, talking and high levels of trust. Which coach is best depends on whom you ask and what perspective of coaching leadership style you prefer, or it could be a generational time difference or simply opposite styles that worked and produced results.…

Tom Izzo has coached the Michigan State Spartans for the past 18 years. His vast accomplishments include winning one national championship (2000), reaching six final four appearances, and collecting seven Big Ten titles. Even though Izzo has been named the nation’s best coach eight times, he doesn’t shed away from his, what I call, “grit to glory.” What do I mean by that? He created a rebounding drill called “war” where his players wear football helmets and pads. His motto, “players play – tough players win," emphasizes the importance of toughness in his program. I admire this most of all his teachings. First, preaching toughness allows him to receive the most out of his players. Creating a sense of purpose to lay everything on the line allows absolute accountability from every player. Next, it reminds me of my father. He has always asked and preached for me to do right and give everything I had. It taught me how to carry myself on and off the court, which is exactly what I see every time I watch Spartan basketball. Last, it’s proven to work. Michigan State is a powerhouse in College Basketball.…
