The Bird and The Butterfly
The film Night and Fog is a documentary about the holocaust where there is a juxtaposition between freedom and dependence based on a historical perspective.
The film starts of with classical music, which is perceived as structured, cultured, and civilized music. Therefore you picture a city in your mind as the credits roll. But Night and Fog transitions to an idyllic barren countryside. The music silences and you hear a delicate flute solo, which makes you visualize a bird or butterfly. The sky dominates the picture as it symbolizes freedom and God. Below the sky there is a field,
which is farmland that shows man’s presence in nature. And off into the distance there is a forest showing wilderness, which exposes what pertains to man, and what is God’s.
Lastly the camera descends into a ranking manner where freedom is no longer overpowering the picture as a fence rises up and you enter imprisonment, the prisoners point of view, thus there is no heaven and you are in hell.
Resnais creates a powerful picture of dehumanization and cruelty. He shows how men and women inside the prison rank lower than birds and butterflies.
