originally wrote this book in Yiddish, which later, his wife, Marion Wiesel translated it into English. Since Marion Wiesel, his wife, translated Night in English, therefore, it has almost if not the same meaning as his original work. His wife is someone who knows him more than anyone else in this world hence, would be able to connect with Elie and his feelings as a Holocaust Survivor. Night is a memoir of the experience Elie had with his father in German concentration camps of Birkenau and Buna.
This was during the period of 1943-45 – towards the end of Second World War II. This book focuses on how unacceptable the situation was in the concentration camps and moreover, gives you a clear idea of how the Germans dehumanized the Jews. In just over a 100 pages, Elie summarizes the effect Holocaust had on Elie and his fellow Jews. He was extremely personal and really effective when it comes to how he conveyed the message he wanted to share. He wanted all of us to realize that something so cruel and inhumane equivalent to the Holocaust once existed in the world, so that people do not repeat it again in the future. Understanding what humans did wrong in the past could help humans not to repeat the same mistake again in the future and that the main purpose for Elie Wiesel to write this book. Elie, in this book, goes through how the morals of the Jews were obliterated and how their perspective towards other fellow Jews have changed. Elie and his father had a close bond with each other but it did not really matter as at the end Elie kept silent when his father moaned for help. Young Elie never responded to his father’s cries and was not able to respond to his father ever again! This book shows how even a strong father-son relationship could be cluttered when fear is injected to their life; fear of
death. Thank you for taking the time to read my letter. Hope that you understand the purpose of my letter and hope that you are going to read this book Night. It is only about 115-16 pages and you could read it in just one day if you want to. It is perfectly acceptable for me if you do not read the book, but try to read it.
