Shmuel: A nine year old Jewish boy of the story. He is the boy Bruno meets through the fence at Out-With. They become friends. Shmuel is very confuse on where he is and what he is doing in the concentration camp on the other side of the fence. He is a prisoner and he must wear the striped pajamas like other prisoners.
Gretel: She is Bruno's older sister who is twelve years old. She doesn't like new things. She
is always playing with her dolls to keeping track of the progress of the war with map. She likes to treat Bruno and really likes to order something to him. She has a crush on Lieutenant Kurt Kotler who is in the military. Mother: She doesn't want to answer the questions of her son about moving to Out-With. She refuses to speak with Bruno about the war. At Out-With, Mother becomes friends with Lieutenant Kotler.
Father: He is the father of Bruno and Gretel and he is a Military Commandant. He is proud of his position in the military. He and his family moves to Poland right outside a concentration camp. Also, he doesn't spend much time with his family because of his works. He tries to protect his family from the horrors of the death camp.
Pavel: Pavel is an old man who prepares meals and waits on Bruno's family so he is a butler. Also, he is a former doctor and now a prisoner at Out-With because he is Jewish.
