Night Life
Bars, drinking, dancing, affordable, late nights, paint parties, and social life are just a few descriptions any UCF student would use when asked about the night life around the University of Central Florida. Located in the heart of Orlando, UCF students are presented with a variety of “hot spots” to choose from. Once the sun sets and the moon begin to appear, you can find many students pondering which club to choose tonight. While going out to clubs may be a good way to relieve stress and expand one’s social status, it can also lead down a spiraling road, making it very difficult to return. College life comes with a lot of freedom. There is no one around to tell you what you can and cannot do. Setting priorities straight and avoiding temptation is a problem many college students struggle with, mainly freshmen. Students cannot avoid the temptation of night life, everywhere we go we are bombarded with advertisements for the upcoming week’s events. Having this newfound freedom presents many issues. Students worry about their social status, and many have a hard time saying “no” to going out in fear of being seen as an outsider or a wallflower by their newest companions. Partying on the weekends is a thing of the past, now students are beginning to go out on school nights, pushing their school work to the back burner. Being a college student, I know firsthand how difficult it is to say “no” and ignore the desire to go out and let loose. As we walk through the Student Union, it is guaranteed that you will walk out with at least one flyer for a club event. Club owners and promoters know how tight and frugal college students are when it comes to money, and they create deals for exciting events that are hard to resist. “Ladies Night,” “College Night,” and “Two-for-One Night,” are only some of the popular events offered by clubs that are hard to resist. Most of the time when students go out, they are also participating in underage consumption of alcohol. It is not

In Froma Harrop “Stop babysitting College Students,” she argues, that college students are to blame for their drinking habits. She also argues that “prohibiting local businesses from selling alcohol to college students,” or banning companies selling alcohol from sponsoring college events and activities, or preventing champagnes at fundraising events, or family occasions will not stop the college students from drinking.…

Binge drinking is a reality of college life in America and perhaps the central focus fraternity life. In Henry Wechsler’s article entitled, “Binge Drinking Must Be Stopped” Wechsler discusses that freshman’s learn during the first week of school where the alcohol and parties are and often has a binge drinking experience even before purchasing a text book. The argument is that freshman’s know where to get alcohol at their first week of school, so they often come back for more and become abuse of alcohol. Wechsler argues that Universities and Colleges presidents should take care of abuse drinking. Wechsler present very little of the opposing side.…

After reading the essay “Stop Babysitting College Students” by Froma Harrop, an editorial writer and columnist for the Providence Journal, the idea of having major universities taking a biased responsibility of its students drinking habits would by no means succeed. As an eighteen-year-old college freshman at the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) who has just recently been exposed to alcohol, I can tell you that there are limited resolutions that any college or university system can do to prevent college students from not drinking alcohol. Most of the average college students’ weekend life and experience includes going to parties and having their fair share of drinks, but if a university put a guard on student consumption to prevent binge drinking and alcohol abuse, it would actually bring an obstruction to many college students.…

(Hingson et al., 2009) Furthermore, 400,000 students between the ages of 18 and 24 had unprotected sex, and more than 100,000 students report having been too intoxicated to know if they consented to having sex. These shocking statistics lead campuses to ban the use of alcohol on their campuses. Except, eliminating drinking on college campuses is unrealistic because college students, like high school students, are subjected to strong social pressures to drink. Moderation is a more realistic goal for college students to avoid the problems of alcohol abuse (Krohn, 2000). America tried, during its history, to ban alcohol. This brilliant idea was known as prohibition. Prohibition did not prevent drinking, and dry campuses won’t prevent drinking. Therefore, drinking is a reality for college student, and it’s going to happen. Teaching students to make better choices about alcohol can prevent excessive drinking and the social problems that come along with it, such as academic problems, sexual assault, suicide attempts and alcohol abuse. The whole point of graduating college is to earn an education, not develop an alcohol addiction. Colleges can’t ignore or avoid the problems of drinking by having a dry campus policy. Drinking happens, and kids need to be educated on how to be able to deal with…

As college students, alcohol is just a common and abused drug throughout campus. Drinking plays a big role in college party scenes as well as tailgating. Most freshmen, sophomores and juniors who fall under the age of 21 will still drink because alcohol is present. In addition, this age group would feel pressured to drink in order to be “cool,” to have a good time or to impress someone. Because of reasons such as this, State College and Penn State invest so much money and…

Young adults are not going to stop drinking, it's a fun activity to them, no matter how serious the consequences can be. The transition between high school and college is an unreal experience for many. For a young student your entire life you need to follow all of these rules. You have to do what you’re told to do. Growing up you’re used to one type of life, and that is in your home life. All through kindergarten and high school, you are brought up to be like drones, or that is what it seems like to be. You are told to do this, do that without any question All this tension brews inside the student that can make them crazy sometimes. Some students handle it better than others. When that day comes, the day to ship off to college, you gain this sense of pride, nervousness, content, but most of all you gain freedom. Freedom is power which allows you to do what ever you want to do without any guardian of yours to talk into your ear telling you what to do. Being young and reckless, students go out and fulfill their need to party and that includes binge drinking to a whole new level.…

College life can be very stressful, and students typically try to find a way to cope with said stress. Stress can be one of the reasons students turn to binge drinking (Binge Drinking). Binge drinking can also cause a student to feel “numb” and let go of all of their worries for a short amount of time. Aside from binge drinking, there are plenty of ways to help cope with stress, such as getting enough sleep (seven to nine hours) and eating a healthy diet (Reed). Another reason that college students could turn to binge drinking could be a desire to fit in (Binge Drinking). An incoming freshman could come into college a completely clean student with no desire to touch alcohol unless it is in a chemistry lab. However, when this student interacts with some of the older students, who love to drink, things may change. Possibly, the freshman could decide to go to a local party where many people could be drinking alcohol and pressure the freshman to drink. Not wanting to seem like an outsider, he could decide to take the drink and not refuse any more for the rest of the night. Instead of going to a party where something may happen, the student could decide to go somewhere that is safer. There are countless reasons that a student in college could start to binge drink, so why try to put a single rule into place that is supposed to cover all of the…

I am only now beginning to enter my sophomore year at college but there has always one part of it that has been especially exciting, the parties. Yes, those glorious nights where you can escape from the nagging of your parents, procrastinate on some of that homework, or maybe even meet someone special. Any average college student could tell you that the craziest parties always happen on Thirsty Thursdays. Once that day of the week comes around students start to forget the stresses of their week and go out to try and have some fun, sometimes too much fun. Many great memories are made at parties, some are good others seem to be the worst times of your life. But what drives a college student to party so hard? Is it s lack of confidence, a desire to fit in, just to let loose, or one of the other many possibilities? In this essay I reflect upon a few of the many parties I attended this past semester and studied the party goers so i could perhaps understand the drive to get so out of hand. During the course of composing my field notes, which I have blended into my essay, I gathered experiences as both an insider and an outsider to the environment to search for the answer to some of my questions.…
