Nike originated because of two men, Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight. Bowerman was the Track and Field coach at the University of Oregon, while Knight was one of his runners. Bill Bowerman wanted to design shoes for his runners that would maximize their performance. Upon Graduating, Knight felt that high performance running shoes could be produced in Japan that could compete with the dominance already established by the German brands of running shoes. Knight convinced a Japanese manufacturer (Onitsuka Co) to send him shoes to distribute in the United States. Upon Receiving the shoes from Onitsuka Co, Knight sent some to his old coach in an attempt to sell some. Bowerman was so impressed that he offered Knight a partnership and to help provide the Onitsuka Company with design ideas. Upon that agreement, the rest was pretty much history. At first, their partnership formed Blue Ribbon Sports and Knight began selling shoes out of his car trunk. Both Bowerman and Knight had full time jobs which meant Blue Ribbon sports could not receive as much attention as it should. Bowerman and Knight realized if Blue Ribbon was going to be successful, they would need a full time employee. Thus, they hired Jeff Johnson. Knight met Johnson while completing his MBA at Stanford University. Johnson was extremely instrumental in the start-up of Nike. He created the swoosh logo, the name itself, its mail-order system, its brochures, and many other key parts of the company.
