By using alternating current society is now able to transmit power far greater distances than was previously possible with direct current. Without alternating current many residential and rural homes and facilities would be without power. Electricity would also be much more expensive than it is today due to this limited range. Induction motors provide certain advantages over direct current motors. While DC motors are used in small appliances, AC motors provide much more power. These motors are used in large electrical equipment that requires copious amounts of power. Additionally, alternating current can be transformed into current from voltage or voltage from current much easier than direct current (“The Nikola Tesla”). By using alternating current a simple transformer is all that is needed to transfer the AC into usable direct current at the power lines near homes. Undeniably, the creation of alternating current has benefited the world …show more content…
Tesla’s discovery of a rotating magnetic field allowed for many of his inventions to work, as this was the basis of many of his inventions (“The Nikola Tesla”). Not only has the discovery of this rotating magnetic field benefited Tesla but many other scientists have used this technology. In 1890, Tesla conceived the idea of his most famous invention, the Tesla Coil. His coil was a large towering metal object that sent brilliant lightning bolts through the air (“Nikola Tesla“). Most likely, one of his most showy inventions, the Tesla Coil, is mostly used for entertainment and displays in current day. Despite it’s use for entertainment, it has still been used for scientific purposes. It is widely accepted that Nikola Tesla invested the first florescent lighting fixtures (“History.com Staff”). Although Nikola called them phosphorescent lamps, he had the original design. Then almost one hundred years later, high efficiency, high frequency light bulbs were made based on Peter Cooper Hewitt’s design. As a direct result of Tesla’s research we were able to advance our own technology to where it is
