Starting with the “Brown Box” invented by Ralph H. Baer in 1967, the video game became noted for being able to be hooked up to any ordinary television. It was able to handle six different games; Ping-Pong, tennis, handball, volleyball, chase games, and a light-gun game. Five years later, Magnavox licensed the technology with the first official video game console called Magnavox Odyssey. Video games were silent and used graphics that we would consider quite primitive. In 1975, there was saw the emergence of Atari into the home console game arena. Theywho? had already been serving the gaming industry in arcades with great success through a game called Pong. The Atari consoles all came equipped with a set number of games as part of the package.
Nintendo entered the video game arena with their first series of game devices from 1977-79, offered in color, and available only in Japan. Technology advanced in the 1980’s with classic games such as Mario Brothers (1983), the Legend of Zelda (1986), Final Fantasy (1987), and Golden Axe (1988) (hongkiat, 2011). The gaming industry was dominated by both Sega and Nintendo during that time but Nintendo (NES) won the victory for best sellingbestselling console of the generation; really identifying Nintendo with the gaming industry.
Sega introduced its best system in 1988, named the Mega Drive/Genesis and a second generation in 1990 to compete with Nintendo. Nintendo introduced the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) two years after Sega’s Mega Drive system. SNK Neo Geo, a company well known in the arcade machine industry, brought awesome graphics into the home console system in 1990 but was quite pricey and hence not received well.
