No-kill shelters are good with animals and have a policy to not kill animals. Animals are simply euthanized (Killed)because no one will adopt them or that there is no room in the shelter. The definition of euthanized is to kill a human or animal (In this case an animal) painlessly because of an incurable sickness according to dictionary.com. “Adopt and Kill” is the policy for kill shelters and has lasted for 100 years leaving countless animals to die. No kill shelters implement programs such as the “no-kill equation. These programs help with providing the community with volunteers that can help care for the animals. Other ways the volunteers can help is with partnerships with rescue groups so …show more content…
that there is more people rescuing. This makes less animals homeless and with minimum care and the essentials, food and water. Less animals on the streets means less animals getting killed because your taking them to no-kill shelters. The volunteers can also do foster care. More care for animals means more animals can come into the shelter and you can have more room in the shelter for other animals that are on the street according to nathanwinograd. No-Kill shelters are important because 2.7 million animals are being euthanized every year. Also, 31% percent of dogs in shelters are euthanized and 41% of cats in shelters are euthanized each year says www.aspca.org. No-kill shelters kill zero animals a year and cares for all of their animals. Also, 31% percent of dogs in shelters are euthanized and 41% of cats in shelters are euthanized each year says www.aspca.org. In conclusion, no-kill shelters are good shelters because they do not kill any of the animals that come in. Volunteers are also helpful to the survival of a lot of animals. No-kill shelters are a lot of help to abandoned animals.
Chapter Two:What is Animal Cruelty/Abandonment/Neglect?
7.6 million pets go to animal shelters every year because of people who abandon their pets. Also every 10 seconds, an animal is abused and abandoned according to petabandon.weebly.com. This is a result of animal abandonment, a major problem across the world. Animal abandonment is leaving an animal behind which might cause harm to the animal according to definitions.uslegal.com. Imagine you're a dog, and your owner just left you, for no reason. That is what around 7.6 million pets have to go through. Some animals that don’t get adopted and end up getting euthanized. Animal cruelty is a bad thing and needs to be stopped. Teen activists are trying to stop this animal cruelty but more people need to help in order to stop animal cruelty as a whole. Animal abusement is also a major problem.
Animal abusement is when people hurt animals on purpose. One form of animal abusement is dogfighting. Dogfighting is a gambling sport where two trained and bred dogs, fight to the death in a dirt with surrounding walls of wood. Over 16,000 dogs die per year from dog fighting only. Results can be severe bruising, deep puncture wounds and broken bones says humanesociety.org. Dogs often die of blood loss, shock, dehydration. One former dogfighter said “Miss Rufus spent most of the rest of the fight on her back and Bandit broke her other front leg high up in the shoulder, as well as one of her back legs, in the knee joint. The only leg she didn’t break she chewed all to h*ll. She had literally scalped Miss Rufus, tearing a big chunk of skin off the top of her head alongside one ear." according to humanesociety.org. Also children are present to these fights which is a bad influence to those kids and tells them that it is okay to abuse animals. Illegal drugs and firearms are found being sold at these events and even homicide is happening at these events. Dogs who are training for these fights are baited on running on a treadmill with an animal in a cage, some ears cut off (For other animals to not latch on) , dogs are injected with steroids, and food is injected with roach poison (A way to kill cockroaches) to make him taste
bad. In many states, animal abusement is illegal and you can be sent to jail, and fined for it. In fact, animal abuse is considered an offence felony. In California, if you cause animal abuse, you will pay a fine of $20,000 and/or be sent to jail for one year says straypetadvocacy.org. In Alabama, if you cause a class C felony(Intentionally hurting a cat or dog) can lead you to ten years in jail. Some statistics of animal cruelty are that 2.7 million animals are euthanized every year, 1.2 million were dogs and 1.4 million were cats. Another stat is that of all the dogs entering shelters, 35% are adopted, 31% are euthanized, and 26% of dogs are returned to their owner. As of cats, 37% are adopted, 41% are euthanized, and 5% return to their owners. 2.7 million animals are adopted each year which does not compare to the amount of animals going to shelters each year (The ratio is 7.6:2.7). According to aspca.org.649,000 animals are returned to their owner each year and with these ratios, the future is going to have a lot of sad animals.
ChapterThree:Why Animals get Abandoned
People have excuses for abandoning their animals. But no excuse is big enough to abandon these animals. The first excuse is allergies. A lot of people have allergies. But allergies is not an excuse to just leave an animal on the streets. If you have allergies, leave your pet at a no-kill shelter so the animal does not struggle. Another excuse is “I’m moving.”This is also a ridiculous excuse because you can just bring your pet with you. If you're moving to a place where pets are not allowed, then leave him in a no-kill shelter. If you just want to not keep him anymore, drop him off at a no-kill shelter. The next excuse is “He’s not cute anymore.”This shows that people don’t care about the animal and only got him because he was cute. If you get an animal only for it’s cuteness and not going to give it correct care, then you should not even have bought him. If you're not giving him enough of the essentials and not giving it your love, then you're neglecting the animal and should not take care of it according to www.peta2.com. Another excuse is “It requires too much attention.” This means that when you're going on a walk, you want people to notice you, not your dog. This shows that dogs have to much to take from you-like attention. The second to last excuse is “He takes too much time and effort.”This simply means you have better things to do than take care of an animal that you adopted. If you're not going to take care of the animal, then give it to a no-kill shelter The last reason that people abandon animals is “He has behavioral problems.”If he has behavior problems, take him to a dog trainer son he gets better behavioral qualities. if that does not work, try to tame him yourself. if that ,does not work, than give him to the local no-kill shelter if you really think he has no chance of having good behavior says prime.peta.org/. In conclusion, people have many excuses for abandoning their animals. If you really want to get rid of the animal, give it to a no-kill shelter. Many people don’t care about animals and their lives-but a teen activist named Faye Carey is trying to help these poor animls
Chapter Four:Faye Carey
Faye Carey is a great teen activist that helps give dogs homes. Faye Carey is a 16 year Waikato teenager volunteer that helps her local animal shelter and the animals for a better life. Every week, the animal shelter that Faye volunteers at recieves 20 dogs every week. Faye opened up a site that received over 300 likes and 60 dogs got adopted. Faye Carey got started by going to work in animal control according to www.3news.co. On the last day she was there, she saw a dog and got it a home in Auckland. "We saw a puppy in the pound the first day I went and on my last day he was still there! I felt so sorry for him. So I advertised him on TradeMe (A large internet-auction website) and he got a lot of likes! He went to a great home in Auckland." Faye said "It can be stressful trying to juggle, because I've got animals at home, chores, and schoolwork. But, I think it is pretty easy because I'm am quite dedicated to the puppies and dogs!" according to petabandon.weebly.com. This quote shows how hardworking she is and how dedicated she is to helping animals. Faye Carey helps out the cause by still going to animal control and grooms the dogs and takes pictures of them for her facebook page. She also spends three hours every night setting up adoptions and responding to emails according to newshub.co. "With Faye's help and work we can quite often get these dogs into suitable caring homes quite quickly now, so it's good. The turnaround is quite fast." says the animal control the Faye works at. Faye has gave 89 dogs and 20 kittens home since November 2012 and the number is still growing according to sweetyhigh.com. "The most rewarding part is when I see each puppy or kitten being adopted and going to a new, loving home, an opportunity they may never have had otherwise,"said Faye. Faye recently got accepted into Unitec Institute of Technology where she plans to get a diploma in investigations and animal welfare, but still works at the animal re-home waikato. "It can get a bit stressful trying to juggle school work, chores, my own animals at home and the work I do for the pound, but somehow I manage it," she said. "I think it is easy for me to do my work as I am so dedicated to helping these animals!" according to sweetyhigh.com. "I do hope to expand Animal Re-home Waikato into a charity within the next year, that way we can save more animals!" she said. In conclusion, Faye Carey is a great teen activist that has a passion in helping animals. She is dedicated and hardworking because the amount of activities she has and helping animals is hard work. In the next year, she plans to raise charity to help even more animals than the ones she helping already.
Chapter Five:How to help
Helping against animal cruelty is a great thing. Every person helps out in the fight. These are ways that you can help in the fight against no animal cruelty/abandonment/neglect in the world.
The first way is joining a place where you can work with multiple people. The first way is making a group or club. With this, you and your group members can work together to help out and make a difference. You can raise money (Maybe for making a no-kill shelter) and help out stray animals by giving them care and good food, water, and shelter. You can also find animals owners and give back their animals if they want to find them. One method you can use to make this happen is putting up missing papers on poles around your the neighborhood that advertise the problem. The second way is to create a website on this problem including statistics, and how you can help. This way, people on the internet can hear about this problem and find out how to help. Giving statistics that are really amazing can make the person go “Oh wow, this is a serious problem.” Spreading awareness is one of the best ways to spread your cause. The third way you can help is to help the animals with rescuing. One way is to fund rescue groups so they could rescue with better equipment for the pet. With better equipment and more money, that rescue can start rescue more animals at once. Also, it is better for the animal to be in safe and reliable gear. The fourth way you can help is to be a foster parent. Caring for multiple animals is a good way to make them happy. To make animals happy and not used to be neglected or for dogfighting is the best way to raise animals. Also, you can convince people in your neighborhood to either adopt a pet, or be a foster parent. As a foster parent, you would also gain more love with the animal and try to help the cause by funding rescue groups or no-kill shelters. The fifth and final way to help is to donate-you don’t have to donate with money, you can donate goods such as food, treats, and bathing supplies. Giving more food and treats will boost the amount of food that the shelter can give to each animal which is better because animal shelters are overflowing and animals are not getting enough food, but donating food will boost that and the happiness of the animals. Bathing supplies are important because without good hygiene, the animals will not feel good. Also, you can donate flat money and the shelters can upgrade whatever they need like, food, bathing supplies, and room for all the pets. In conclusion, helping animals is a great way to give them happy lives. Every way from foster parenting to making a club or group are great ways to make animals happy. Animal abusement, cruelty, abandonment, and neglect are all major problems in the world. With everybody helping, we could reduce the number of abused animals, euthanized animals, and abandoned animals.
