When Esma started to date Pelda, her daughter Sara was uncomfortable and worried about losing her affection. Sara believed that her mother would remarry and focused on her husband, so that she would not be important to her anymore. Esma reassure her that she would never never never leave her. This reflected how much Esma loves her daughter, irrespective of the fact that she was impregnated by someone who was raping her. Mothers were inclined to connect emotionally with their children even in the case of rape. There was another scene where Pelda, a soldier in the war, visited his mother, who had some degree of dementia. His mother did not realize the pass of time, and thought the war was still going on. Pelda chose not to tell her the truth, but to lie with good intentions. For purposes of trying not to hurt his mother, he coaxed her into having bread, and told her that they got food and supplies from the government. Pelda showed the capacity of gentleness and care by patiently nudging his mentally declining mother to have a bite of food, and by covering her in kisses (Gordana Crnkovic,

In Miss America By Day, Marilyn Van Derbur told her story of incest, that she experienced throughout her childhood. She explained how she was sexually abused by her father, from age 5 to the time she was 18 years old, when she was able to leave her home and go off to college. Marilyn wrote about how her father would come into her room, at least once a week, to molest or rape her. The visits became more frequent when she was a teenager. She would lie awake in her bed, curled up in a tight fetal position, anticipating when he would come into her room and violate her. When he would come in at night, she would pretend she was sleeping throughout the whole defilement. The waiting was very traumatic for her on its own, because even if he didn’t come in a particular night, she still wouldn’t be able to go to sleep or relax her body from the fear of his next “visit.”…

Paula, Jacob’s daughter, always coasts through life with an effortless smile across her face…or so it seems. Paula has a beautiful, angelic voice that could stop you in your tracks. “Paula had filled the silence with her own voice.” (175) The silence created by her Father’s omission of his past impacts Paula to have an empty, negative space in her life. On the outside, no one would ever accuse Paula of thinking negatively or being afraid. But, you cannot judge a book by its cover, “You wouldn’t believe it, but I’m still so afraid of the dark, after all this time; I go to sleep with my hands and feet twisted together for comfort.” (123) Jacob never told Paula of his past, which led to Paula feeling insecure, afraid, and lost. Once Paula does find out the truth of her father’s past, she is “broken, like somebody took her (me) apart.” (214) Jacob was just trying to protect his daughter by keeping his past a secret, but in the end has a more negative impact on her life.…

However, many slaves often become separated from their own families. This leads to the lost of emotional support that is needed for human development. Family members begin to lose a sense of connection due to the separation, which results in not having the will to fight for their liberation. For example, while Linda overhears that Mr. Dodge “said his wife had never signed her right to [Linda’s] right to [her children], and that he could not get [her], he would take them”(Jacobs 928) According to Li, maternal instincts have an innate attachment, meaning that mothers are attached to their own children to the point that they would do whatever it takes to keep them safe. Through her maternal instincts, Linda overcomes the authority of the slave owner to free her children.…
