Some days I'm an outcast, some days I have a group of friends. It is clear that everyone is beautiful in their own unique way. It doesn’t matter if you’re a boy or a girl. It doesn’t matter if it’s the beauty on the inside or the outside that counts. Everyone is beautiful.…
The useful may be trusted to further itself, for many produce it and no one can do without it; but the beautiful must be specially encouraged, for few can present it, while yet all have need of it. Beauty does not lie in the face. It lies in the harmony between a person and his or her industry. Beauty is expression. Lucy Grealy’s book Autobiography of a Face takes a deep look at the societal stereotypes and perceptions. At the end of her book she writes “Society is no help. It tells us again and again that we can most be ourselves by acting and looking like someone else , only to leave our original faces behinds to turn in ghosts that will inevitably resent and haunt us” (pg. 222). This passage is in the conclusions; because through her experience she was face with the social and cultural expectation Grealy’s life after her cancer was filled taunts and stares from strangers. These judgments made Grealy very concerned with the perception of how others saw her.…

Only the strong individual within can decide this fact, and when trying to conform to the social background or hide in the foreground, others will conclude that you are weak. The powerful lyrics to “Butterfly Girl” speak to the stereotypes and help peel back the layers of the cocoon to become free. In my experience the cocoon was weakness that society wove into me and breaking out of that helped me decide to become the strong woman I am today. Defining a human being can be tough, but the mirror can only reflect half of the whole; the unseen butterfly within every…
This Ted Ed Talk by Brene Brown discusses the idea of human connection and the power of accepting ones self. Brene discusses her journey to try to dissolve the mystery of vulnerability and the lack of human connection involved with it. Her research concludes that the best way to connect with others is to accept and embrace that you are vulnerable, and your vulnerabilities are a part of you. To be able to connect with others, you must first be able to connect with yourself. Brene discusses that vulnerability is a possible birth place for joy and love, art and beauty. Her research points out that we try to numb our vulnerabilities. However we go further and we numb our gratitude, happiness. We try to numb all of our emotions.…
"Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy." Matthew 5:7. Whether they give it or receive it, people will always need mercy. Love is a prerequisite of mercy. Forgiveness connects people in ways that might benefit all concerned because if people can forgive each other for their mistakes, they offer mercy to each other. Trust results from showing mercy. If people can trust one another, then they can show mercy in different aspects of other people's lives. Mrs. Luella in "Thank you Ma'am" and Sherlock Holmes in "The Blue Carbuncle" both give mercy to someone they did not even know because they overflow with love, forgiveness, and trust.…
In poetry slam, some people use humor and irony that have messages that they want the audience to know. One of the participants, Katie Makkai presents her poem, Pretty, which has deep meaning behind it. She does brings laughter from the crowd as she begins her poetry about her childhood and brings out a naïve persona. As the poem goes on, she slowly implies to the audience that nobody can be call “pretty”, by reasoning that everyone has flaws since he or she is born. She uses herself as one of the example and tells that one can be “pretty intelligent, pretty creative” , but not “pretty”. Thus, Makkau is able to get audience attention through her humorous beginning of the poem and also bring some important life messages to her…

The well known singer, Lady Gaga, talks about how people do not truly understand until they’re put in the same situation in her song, “‘til it happens to you”. She sings, “til it happens to you, you don’t know how it feels” (Source B). She uses this chorus to send a message that one does not know what other people are going through until it has “happened” to them. They cannot fully sympathize or “feel” what that person because they don’t know the extent of what they are going through. The author, Ilene Bauer, teaches us a similar principle in her poem by stating “Judging others isn’t fair unless we’ve lived their lives” (Source C).…
