The year of terror is one of the most complex and misunderstood periods in the French Revolution. Palmer, in his book, Twelve Who Ruled, however, takes this period and skillfully turns it into a written masterpiece. The book is narrated from the point of view of someone with an omniscient knowledge of the subject matter, who is reflecting back on the period from the outside.…

The Reign Of Terror was an unjustified part of the French Revolution. These hateful and vengeful acts led to an outburst of fear amongst the french people. What once started as a start to a new government led to an unexpected ruling of Maximilien Robespierre. Robespierre was the leader of the Public Safety Committee, and the reason king Louis XVI and many others were executed. He wanted to lead the french people to victory during this revolution, but the power corrupted him. Thus leading to the reign of terror and later his own death by the people.…

The Reign of Terror (AKA The Terror) was a period during the French Revolution that was filled with violence which lasted from June 1793-July 1794. Many people were killed at this time, like the French people that did not support the revolution were executed at the guillotine. I believe that the Reign of Terror was unjustified because it was unfair, inhumane, and unnecessary.…

In his article “Terrorism,” Michael Walzer describes terrorism as the indiscriminate murder of innocent people. He goes on to explain that terrorists have the objective of destroying the morale of a nation and instilling fear within a society by not targeting a specific group of people, but rather, targeting the population as a whole and killing “random” people. Walzer and many like-minded philosophers share the view that terrorism is wrong and is not justified under any circumstances; thus rendering it akin to murder. The preceding view is referred to as the “the dominant view,” as labeled by Lionel K. McPherson, because it is common to a great deal of people – many of who are not philosophers. McPherson attempts to discredit the notion that terrorism is wrong by relating it to modern warfare and showing the ways in which it is better in comparison. After reading the opposing arguments presented by Walzer and McPherson, I will be proving that although terrorism is not as immoral as war, it is still wrong.…

To start with we must understand what is meant by a weapon. Encyclopaedia Britannica defines a weapon as “An instrument used in combat for the purpose of killing, injuring, or defeating an enemy.” (Britannica 2013). The Oxford English dictionary defines weapon as “An instrument of any kind used in warfare or in combat to attack and overcome an enemy.” (OED 2013). It is clear from both definitions that a weapon is used in combat against an enemy to overcome them. The act is deliberate in such that it is intentional, not by accident. Therefore this essay will examine cases that terrorism is used by the state deliberately, there must be “mens rea” present.…

One cannot avoid long-standing debates, going back as far as Aristotle, over when it is politically and morally acceptable to use unconventional tactics such as violence and fear to bring about political and social change. History is replete with the ideas of great thinkers who believed that, under the right circumstances, unconventional tactics were not only smart, but a moral or civic duty. Religious leaders over the centuries have contributed thoughts about when unjust warfare is just, when "holy terror" is justified, and military thinkers have advocated less-than-honorable tactics. Most terrorism throughout history has been directed against governments also called political or revolutionary terrorism, but terrorism can also be global or take the forms of state terrorism or state-sponsored terrorism. These latter types occur when governments turn on their own citizens, or try to stir up trouble among the citizenry of another nation. In fact, it was state terrorism that put modern use of the term "terrorism" in our English vocabulary.…

The recorded history of the world clearly points out the major political changes that occurred in the world are largely due to violence rather than revolutions or any other forms of passive resistance. For example, Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) tried to conquer Europe by violence while Adolf Hitler (1889-1945), leader of the Nazi Party and Chancellor of the German Reich killed millions of Jews in aggression with the view to creating an Aryan German state. One of the best substantiations that we witness today is the America’s war against terrorism. It undoubtedly expresses the America’s interior thought to extend its political power in the gulf region under the guise of war against terrorism. All these incidents evidently show that the violence has been used as one of the major instruments to gain political power in the history of the world.…
