Noli Me Tangerine Analysis
The theme of our poem is to not judge anything by its appearance and the tone is annoyed and grateful. One of the tones is annoyed because Paul and the Tangerine kids were always annoyed by either Paul’s family or by how they were treated. The second tone is grateful because Paul was happy to get a second chance on the soccer team and the Tangerine kids were happy to be treated with more respect. We chose this theme because there are many examples in the book that we can describe and elaborate on since this theme is throughout the whole book. We can also relate to this theme because many people get judged by their appearances at school, and we believe that if we give them a chance they can also be valuable to us like how Paul became valuable …show more content…
So we chose to incorporate words such as, “And the judging kills me everyday” and “I want things to change” to indicate that the tone is annoyed. Next, we chose to include words such as, “I am treated fairly” and “I like it this way” to express that the tone is also grateful. This poem’s sensory details were also influenced by our tone because it affected the way that we described the surroundings and how Paul as well as the Tangerine kids felt. For example, we used the words “like a puppy, soft and sweet” and “I am a fierce, forceful, and fearless animal” to add sensory details that sound annoying and grateful. The figurative language in our poem has changed because we had to associate words that would be a simile, metaphor, hyperbole, personification, or even alliteration. Lastly, some examples of figurative language that we used in our poem is “everyone in the world,” this says that the person was talking about a lot of people and not necessarily everyone in the world, but a lot of people. We also used “judging kills me,” which can inform the audience that the person is annoyed by everyone judging them because of their

In Oranges by Gary Soto he uses figurative language as in, similes, metaphors, personification, and imagery. An example of a simile that Gary soto used in his poem, Oranges is, “ Fog hanging like old coats between trees.” If he had not added in that one sentence it would make an entire two or three lines more plain and more hard to understand. An example of Imagery would be, ” As I walked toward her house, the one whose porch light burned yellow.” If he didn’t add that we wouldn’t have that image pop up in our head of the porch light burning yellow to make the bugs go away. If Gary Soto wouldn’t have used figurative language I wouldn’t have understood the poem as well as I did.…

The poem demonstrates tone well using her emotions and feeling toward turning fifteen. This author takes her own experience and puts it into the poem. She describes the time she turned fifteen and how it made her felt. Cofer’s figure of speech is obvious showing the readers that she does not want to grow up. As she is transitioning into womanhood she seems to struggle with the idea of being a woman who wears satin slips and not the innocent girl who plays with doll. With adulthood comes more responsibilities and she herself must take on household tasks such as washing her own clothing and sheets. This will prepare her for marriage. She undergoes so many bodily transformations, practically overnight, that make her feel uncomfortable. Her menstrual cycle starts, which she feels is shameful. She is growing out of her innocence into a woman and dolls are no longer a choice in the path she must follow. All of which is overwhelming for her to take in, she just wants the anxiety of growing up to pass.…

    3. The tone and mood of the poem are mysterious at the beginning when it is not clear what is really going on, but kind of uncomfortable at the end when the reader identifies what the children had done and how they have made their mother feel embarrassed from their actions. Maxine Tynes uses imagery, comparison and connotation ("dipped in the brown skin magic") to convey this mood and tone.…

It could be argued that without figurative language, enjoyable literature would cease to exist. The written word would be like a textbook, convening facts with no depth, setting or emotion. James Hurst’s The Scarlet Ibis is a perfect example. James Hurst uses figurative language to set the mood of the story and to foreshadow Doodle’s death. It mixes in with the story like a picture and a paintbrush to successfully aid the reader in becoming immersed with the tale’s setting and to inform them of the grim fate that awaits Doodle. Figurative language is a key part of the book and it would be very dull and lifeless without.…

The theme of this poem is that society is not accepting of people who do not represent the ideal woman. In “Barbie Doll”, the young girl is teased about her nose and legs. The girl was advised to play cool, charming, eat right and exercise. She tried all these things but in the end she still wasn’t successful at pleasing her classmates. In the end, trying to please her classmates resulted in her cutting off her nose and legs, which lead to death. In today’s society as girls grow into young women, they are told to look a certain way. The ideal look usually involves being skinny, make-up, long hair, and a beautiful smile. In the real world, one of these leading factors is known as anorexia. Girls will not eat, over exercised themselves, and throw up just to maintain a certain weight level. In schools, girls are teased every day or bullied about one part of their appearance or another. Things have gotten so bad that some girls do result in committing suicide or overworking themselves. Everyone comes in different shapes and sizes, if it was meant for everyone to be one size; clothes will mostly come in one size. Since this is not true, everyone should love their size and who they are.…

One issue that the speaker addresses is the pressure to fit in with her peers. The poem deals with such topics as dancing and upcoming parties ("I have to learn to dance/ In time for the next party"), the importance of fashion ("I have nothing to wear tomorrow") and physical appearance ("Why do I have to be/ The one/ Wearing braces"). These are typical topics that cause teenagers to fear failure in terms of social acceptance. The pressure of not fitting into societal norms can oppress these young individuals, both emotionally and socially and the speaker is quite clear in the poem that she is concerned with these issues.…
