He documented 11 birds, 11 mammals and 2 fish that were unknown to naturalists. He actually brought his trusty dog, Seaman along for the journey. Seaman was a 150 pound, big, black Newfoundland dog. He was very intelligent and was bought in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania for $20. What cost $20.00 in 1800 would cost $260.40 now; today $260 is the average you would pay for a Newfoundland puppy. Alvar Nuñez Cabeza de Vaca unlike most other Spanish conquistadors came to perceive Native Americans as equals. On February 15, 1527 Cabeza de Vaca was appointed to an expedition, headed for the mainland of North America. The expedition landed near what is now Tampa Bay, Florida sometime in March 1528. Devastated by misfortune the expedition dwindled rapidly. Cabeza de Vaca and three other members however survived. His endurance now tested Cabeza de Vaca lived as a trader and healer among Native Americans of the Rio Grande Basin learning from them and eventually speaking on their behalf to the Spanish crown.…

I have been inside the huts all day taking care of the children and trying to make it more like a home. I've conversed with another one of the ladies and she told me that some of the men have ventured into the forest today looking for the lost colonists. There were many gentlemen sent over during England's last trip; they were to start building a camp, but ran out of supplies so one ship returned to England while the rest of the men stayed here. The book fails to mention the heinous acts committed by many of the “heroes” of the nation in the name of “civilizing” the West. History is filled with people doing things “for the good of their country”. For example, it is easy to point out our founding fathers going to war with Great Britain to grant us freedom. It is almost even easier to point out that when Hitler started World War II, he was doing it “for the good of his country”. In the successes and failures of these undertakings, there is a certain amount of pride that individuals hold when discussing the exploration of the “Great Northwest”.
