Many modern studies have compared the effectiveness of psychotherapy, specifically Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) with clinical pharmacotherapy approaches. While these approaches both work well on their own, few studies examine the long-term effects of a combination of both CBT and pharmacotherapy. Information gathered from existing studies that explore the effectiveness of combination therapy have shown that CBT and pharmacotherapy together yield a stronger result in treating depression than when used alone. One meta-analysis which compared the individual results of CBT and pharmacotherapy between subjects with different types of anxiety disorders and subjects with depression demonstrated that depression showed similar response levels…
Throughout this course I have taken great interested in Cognitive Behavioral Theory or (CBT) which was developed in the 1960s by Albert Ellis and Aaron Beck. CBT is a therapeutic technique that underlies with other different theories, which also focused on the “here and now”. Put simply, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy changes one’s dysfunctional behaviors and/or thoughts to more realistic and healthy ones. This type of therapy encompasses a number of therapies focusing on the impact of an individual’s thinking as it conveys to expressed behaviors.…
The article “ Becoming unblued” by Michael Castleman explains the reasons why cognitive therapy is a better than taking Prozac or another antidepressant medication. Cognitive therapy consists of correcting the distorted thinking triggered by depression and uses ultra-low tech.( para 2). However, more and more people turn to pills because they believe it to be cheaper, the problem however is that most of these people are actually in the mild- depression range which means they can help their depression without the need for medication. The article indicates, “ An estimated 17.6 million Americans suffer from depression each year… companies sold U.S. drugstores $3.5 billion worth of SSRIs… whose most tragic consequence, suicide claims more than 30,000 lives a year”( para 4-5 ). So many people are disappearing without a chance because we are not informing them that they are consuming drugs they do not need and also that they are taking too much of it. We can not ignore overprescription and overdose because it is an issue. The article also mentions other methods like acupuncture and exercise which are proven to improve one’s self esteem and health (para 7).Not also it would make people healthier, but it would also be cheaper because there would be no need to pay for pills or go to the gym they could work out at a park or even at home and whatever time they can. This would also induce their children or other family members to do more exercise which then would prevent from other diseases. There is no doubt that antidepressants do help some people and it is true but they also harm so many other people. The condition to prescribe medication is that it will only be given to the people who actually need it not to get an extra commissary in your…

In Beck & Bredemeier article (2016), the author links depressive self-referential schemas with depression. Depressive self-referential schemas about the low self-esteem, negative self-evaluation, and high expectations of negative outcomes, of a man, can impaired with his attention, interpretation, and memory. Self-referential schemas determine how individual appraisal a stimulus.…
In fact, meditation's dependency on a patient's ability to recognize and remove negative thinking patterns may be what removes their depression altogether. To begin with, a single trial focused on treating patients suffering from treatment-resistant depression (TRD) discovered: “by strengthening cognitive control mechanisms, meditation may lessen ruminative processes and thereby diminish depression” (qtd. in Eisendrath, 100). This information reveals that patients actively participating in mindfulness activities created their own defense-mechanism against depression itself. To demonstrate even further, patients continued their usual medication throughout the trial (102), but it was found there was no connection between the use of medication and meditation (108) meaning the factor that reduced depression severity in patients was the addition of meditative treatment (104). Overall, it can be interpreted that meditation does not only cure depressive symptoms, but gives patients the means to overcome their mental illness without the assistance of medication…
